Troy Bailey pointed a 9mm Glock pistol at his mother Julia Bennett, 33, after mistaking it for a toy gun.
The victim's ex-boyfriend claimed he watched in horror as the toddler accidentally pulled the trigger.
Mr Troy Bailey Sr. admitted he had left the gun unattended when he visited his ex at her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Bailey Sr, who has permit for the gun, said his son picked up the loaded weapon and pointed it at Ms Bennett and pulled the trigger.
Police said Ms Bennett, a nursing assistant, died from a single gunshot wound.

This shit is why we need to ban gun. Too many times children are able to get to these things, and it always ends in tragedy.

No. This is why parenting is important. Troy Bailey should be charged with negligent homicide.

This

The owner of the firearm has exactly ZERO business leaving it where a small child could access it.

They should ban dogs too.

And bath tubs.

And cars.

And about a million other things that cause people to die.

They should ban you too...

2 year old can pull trigger??

and gun wasn't safetied?

prosecute owner of the gun for criminal negligence causing death.

While I agree this Tray Baily needs to be charged with some crime, this story only brings to the light the FACT that a gun in own home is more likely to be used to shoot and kill one of your own loved ones than an intruder or attacker.

Having electricity in the home greatly increases the risk of being electrocuted.

Ban electricity.

Interesting. Pistols are still pretty heavy.

For him to have picked it up, aimed, and pulled the trigger is pretty impressive, as sad as the story is.
EDIT: Nevermind; the gun is pretty light, but the trigger pull is still 5.5lbs.

This wasn't his home thus the gun did not actually belong in the home and you could even say that the guy was an intruder.

I don't believe in outright total gun bans, but people, comparing weapons to any other non-weapon object is a stupid argument. There's plenty of good points to make, why start with the weakest one?

A GLOCK is a "safe action" pistol with a two stage trigger. It has no traditional "safety" switch because of how the trigger works, it also does not have a traditional "hammer" which when cocked is held under pressure until release. With a GLOCK, even with a round chamberd the fireing mechinism is NOT under pressure until the trigger is pulled (the actual trigger pull creates the pressure).

The second stage of the GLOCK trigger is what actually "fires" the gun. In order to depress the second stage you must first depress the first stage. A GLOCK will NOT go off accidentally, it must intentionally be set off.

You can actually push on the second stage of the trigger with the tip of your finger and it will not budge (I've tried it with an empty gun several times).

Most GLOCKs have a fairly heavy trigger out of the box (usually 5-7 lbs or greater). I'm surprised a 2 year old could grip the weapon and fire multiple shots. I am surprised the hand is large enough. I suppose the child could hold the gun with one hand and depress the trigger with his opposite hand.

Right.. The guns I own are all put up, with the safety on, unloaded/no mag. Like any responsible gun owner. There is no way I would leave a gun around my kids especially if it were loaded with the safety off.

You know banning stupidity would solve a lot more problems that banning guns.

Just to play devil's advocate- a gun's sole design purpose is to kill. Everything else listed has been designed to perform a function other than killing, but could be lethal if misused.

Discuss.

You don't have kids do you?

My 2 year old is 3ft tall and over 30pounds and is plenty strong.

But something still does not add up. The gun owner should be charged IMO. I am far from a gun nut but way to many times people that own guns and do not take care of them don't get charged and it makes all the good gun owners look bad. This was a owner issue, not a gun issue.

I don't think an over/under shotgun is designed to kill. Neither is my 30" barrel trap gun. There are plenty of guns that are designed for competitions and not to kill.
