Just checking out the System Builder Marathon article over at Tom's and he uses a Cooler Master 850W psu to power two 9800GX2s. He writes that it had plenty to spare as it drew less than 600 watts in gaming conditions.

My vacuum cleaner only goes up to 1200W on maximum setting. And my vacuum cleaner sucks.

Nah, it blows.

But 1200W PSUs? Stop the insanity! What about the environment? Won't somebody think of the children? Etc.

Seriously, surely PC power requirements can't get any higher, not with the price of oil what it is anyway.

You don't draw 1200W all of the time. You draw what your system needs. 1200W is just for the .001% of people who OC to record breaking clocks that have quad SLI/xfire and extreme quad core CPUs. The rest just want to have a big ewang to belittle others with smaller PSUs. People that have 1200W PSUs will argue that they need the head room because they are like boy scouts....prepared for anything. Well...that is true but the down side is that they pay a lot of money for a PSU that they don't need.

They will argue that you cut it too close and are losing efficiency if your system is drawing anywhere near 300W of your peak power. True....efficiency does go down but it is just about the same in an 800W as it is in a 1000W PSU so that is just the kettle calling the pot black. So don't be shocked if people with 1KW PSUs tell you that a 700W PSU is not enough to run xfire 4850 that has a total system draw of 350W. Citation: http://www.tweaktown.com/revie...ption_tests/index.html
