Nice, passively cooled.
That shows that nvidia just went above and beyond and put a nice cooler on their 6800U designs, while ATI skimped and put that dinky little crap on theirs..

That's because ATI's cards use MUCH less transistors then NVIDIA's hence they do not need the cooling...

IT just so happens that Gigabyte put that cooler on, not nVidia...

 What does Gigabyte putting a (very nice) passive cooler on a 6800 card have to do with the nVidia reference cooler on a 6800U??

Anyway, I like how nVidia boardmakers seem to use a lot more imagination than ATI boardmakers and actually give buyers some choice.

Now only if Nvidia boardmakers start using better components.

Hmm it is $412, why would you want this over the $399 GT?

Exactly guys, I just posted this FYI!!! Not to make some bold statement like nVidia is better. If you like ATI, cool. Yeesh

That's right.
And this card has GDDR, not GDDR 3, so nothing is new here. But the ASUS GDDR3 6800 is another thing.

Careful on the gigabyte card, there have been reports of people finding they have 8 pipes and 2 vertex shaders dissabled in bios.

I wonder if Asus botched their naming? Because the v9999's clockspeed matches the 6800GT's.

Asus has a GT, this is a NU.

As for why you'd want this over a GT at this price, for the most part you wouldn't. The V9999 is probably the best built 6800NU though, and it's for sure the fastest, performs close to the 6800GT. It does have the "cool and unusual" factor all over it though.

the problem with the giga-byte is not only would it get kinda hot with no fan but its turned out to be a 6800le model and not a 6800. so I woundt advise. was gonna get one myself till I learned that. great software bundle

Yeah I just felt like trolling :p
But really, the people that says nvidia has a hot and power hungry design pisses me off, because nvidia went above and beyond to put a nice cooler on there, and they get bashed for it.
I know because my 9800Pro was FAR less resistant to my hot case temps in so. cali weather than my 5900.

The HSF on the R9700/9800 series was by far their weakest point, they were as cheap/generic as you can get.

I liked the multi fan approach of the Gainward/Albatron/Leadtek 5900s, loved the OTES on the Abit 5900.

Except for the recent Zalman and IceQ equipped boards, ATI GPUs have always had smaller, cheesier fans. Usually because they ran cooler, but that won't fly for the OC crowd.

Anyway, it would be more interesting if ATI OEMs were more imaginative is all I'm trying to say.

Unless that's copper (probably not, as copper is more expensive on a material basis), I bet that thing gets REALLY ass hot. A zalman bracket mount fan would prolly be really useful there, however.
