2 speeding tickets within 10 days of each other. How do I salvage my insurance?

Hi there,

I was making the long drive from Washington to Oklahoma and in the process, got two speeding tickets--an 85-in-a-65 in Oregon and a 76-in-a-65 in Texas.

Is there any way for me to work it so that I don't get killed by insurance?

Never go back to those states and don't pay it.

Or you could take drivers ed for one and try to fight the other one, or just let one hit your insurance

you can get the texas one dismissed and completely off your record by taking defensive driving.

FIRST, look up whether your state counts the points for the speeding tickets you received in the other states. If they don't then your insurance shouldn't go up, so just pay the fines without any worries.

First you can start by dumping that S2k. 76 in a 65 is a little pushy of the cop. I guess out of state in your car is a good target for them :(

Well, that could be any of 8 counties (no 65 zone in Multnomah county) over some 300 miles. AFAIK, Oregon has no ticket deferral or defensive driving programs, and the only way to actually fight the ticket is at court in person, so you're probably screwed. I would say that your best bet (short of hiring a lawyer, which I don't usually recommend) would be to check the option on the back of the ticket for "guilty but with explanation" and pay the ticket with a nice well-written letter for the judge. They might accept your explanation and send a partial refund of the fine back to you, but that won't help your insurance. :(

Is there a place I can look that up? California's a pretty big place to be asking around...

Yeah...no kidding...What makes it worse is that it was just after midnight on a clear night with no within in front of or behind me for at least 2 miles...no hills or curves either :|

In fact, I've written a whole outline of what I plan to say if I do fight that Texas one:

Yeah, 76 in a 65 is pushy of the cop but I've seen worse. I got a ticket for 77 in 65 in southern Douglas county, OR back in '96 on a straight stretch of freeway with no other cars and a beautiful clear moonlit night at about 1am. And what did the d!ck cop proceed to do? Lecture me for almost 10 minutes about how 77 was "dangerous" and "too fast" and I "could have killed someone."

He had already given me the ticket and my ID back, so I asked finally, "Are we done?" He said yes, and I almost drove over his foot.

general rule in oregon on the 5, you can do 73 and not get busted. contest it is your best bet, its worth the trip for both to take them to court, it will be much cheaper then the insurence in the long run.

That varies from state to state. Some states share, some don't.

Narzy is right about Oregon. Unless there are special circumstances, you won't get out of that 85 in a 65, especially if the ticket was in Linn, Lane, Douglas, Josephine, or Jackson counties -- their courts are rigged. Best to take the advice in my post above.

My gathering is that the people who B&M about people B&M'ing for getting a ticket, don't necessarilly think that speeding is wrong, just that you should pay it when you get caught. In my opinion, I suggest going to traffic court yourself, or hiring a lawyer to represent you (since you are out of state).

I think the insurance advice posted above is bad.... just because your state may not count the points from another state doesn't mean that the insurance company won't get the information and switch you to a higher risk category and jack up your rates. They'll do that whether or not you have points in your state.... if it's on your record that they can see.

So, imo, your only chance of keeping your insurance low is for them not to see it. Get a lawyer... should be worth it. The 11 over in texas is a good chance of going away, the other one... maybe they'll waive points and fine but probably will still appear on your record. In the meantime you'll have bought yourself close to a year just by fighting it, so even if it does apear it'll only be on your insurance record for 2yrs instead of 3 if you bend over now.
