2 Sound Cards?

Is it possible to have 2 sound cards in a computer and have them used for different stuff? Like let's say I have onboard sound that I want to use to play window event sounds and some kids games, but I have a sound card I want to use only for Winamp. That way I can run the outs of the sound card playing winamp to my stereo, and my daughter can still play reader rabbit and I wont hear that through the stereo. Is this even remotly possible? Thanks.

Just buy an audio switch from radio shack or the like, and run the output of the soundcard to it then split and switch to your stereo and whatever your daughter uses. But this is assuming that you want to be listening to music the same time as your daughter plays the games. I don't think you can assign sounds to different sound cards, but you can have two cards in one machine. Just be careful of driver conflicts and irq conflicts.

Yes it is quite possible, I have a friend who does this. He has his music going to his home stereo and other sounds going to his computer speakers.

How did he set this up?

I'm not sure of the details, but I don't think there was much to it. Just install the card and you are good to go, you may have to play with IRQ's and DMA's though.

Under Audio Device properites, you can select the default audio divice for windows. In Winamp, you can configure the output plug-in (under Properties->Plug-ins->Output) to use wich ever card you want.
