Isn't it weird that Republicans, Communist China, and the Soviet Union all chose red? Granted, its the other similarities they share that are the real concern. They all demand worship of the state (i.e. blind nationalism) and specific pathetic wannabe tough guys that can't handle criticism.

Historically, the Republicans were usually depicted as blue, even as far back as the oldest US electoral map, from the 1880's. Check out this article from the Los Angeles Times:

That has long annoyed me. Typical American exceptionalism, using the colours backwards compared to how the rest of the world does (where 'red' is _always_ the colour of the left, and blue that of the right). Just to be awkward and different for the sake of it.

Though my understanding it was an accident - the TV networks used different colours in different elections, but just happened to use red for Republicans in the 2000 election that became such a big deal because of all the hanging chad controversy, and, maybe because that one went on so long and so intensely, those colours stuck ever since (I didn't read the linked article, I'm guessing that says much the same thing).

And I do think there's a certain logic in it. Red is the colour of blood (and sunburn), and has an association with proletarian struggle. On the other hand, aristocrats were always "blue bloods".

Maybe because they were traditionally very pale due to not working outside? And of course as these differences always get deliberately exaggerated traditional aristocrats would even powder their faces with mercury, ruining their health just to emphasise they were pale, and thus not a pleb. Same reason why posh white women have to be skinny, so as not to be mistaken for a lower-class person.

In the US there's a bit of a reversal in that working class white people are quite likely to be Republican i.e. on the right, while liberals are often quite posh, so it's not completely illogical for the colours to be swapped over. Even though its annoying as every Republican election victory has me looking at the map and thinking "wow, socialism triumphs!""
