First time poster here - and not too technical. While I have no problem building computers and basic maintenance, networking has never been something I've been good at - so here's my question.
I have a cable modem (Adelphia) and dynamic IP address.
I have a D-Link DI-514+ 802.11B router that I managed to configure to access my work VPN (with my laptop). D-Link had a FAQ for SecureRemote on their site making it easy to configure...but before I found that I had no chance whatsoever.
Basically it told me to do the following:
******************
Secure Remote 4.1
** The LAN network (192.168.0.xxx) should be different than the IP range used for the VPN. Please contact your admin or IS department for this information.
Upgrade your router to the latest firmware. You can download firmware at http://support.dlink.com/downloads.
Disable all Firewall Software (ZoneAlarm, Windows XP Firewall, etc.).
Step 1 Open the Web Configuration Page by entering 192.168.0.1 into your web browser. Enter username (admin) and your password (blank by default).
Step 2 Click on TOOLS and then MISC. Disable UPnP and Enable IPSec.
Step 3 Click APPLY and then CONTINUE.
Step 4 Click on the ADVANCED tab and then VIRTUAL SERVER.
Step 5 In the Virtual Servers list, click the notepad (edit) icon next to IPSEC. The line will turn yellow and the information on the top half of the screen will be filled in.
Step 6 Enter the IP address of your computer in the box next to PRIVATE IP.
Step 7 Click APPLY and then CONTINUE.
Step 8 You should now be able to connect to your VPN.

Anyways, I just purchased a new Belkin 802.11G router that I can't get to work w/ the VPN - since I'm a noob I can't figure out the right way to (effectively) emulate the settings above on the Belkin.
Since the Belkin is much better (the D-Link constantly loses the signal even if 10 feet away from the router) I'd like to still be able to use it for general web-browsing when I don't need the VPN. When I need the VPN I'll either deal with the drops, or more likely just go wired when necessary.
What I envision doing is daisy chaining them. Coming from the wall: Cable Modem -> D-Link -> Belkin. I figure with this I can go wired w/ the D-Link when I need to use SecureRemote, but when I just want general internet access I can go through the Belkin (wireless). Another benefit is I can put the belkin in the living room (where our cable comes in and I actually really need the best wireless signal) and can have the D-Link in the office (where I would need VPN access).
Can this work? If so, what settings do I need to change on the D-Link to make sure the Belkin can pass through to the cable modem without issues. Somebody told me I had to "Make sure to reserve an IP from the D-Link and assign that IP as the Belkin's gateway."...but of course I don't know how to do that.
Thanks everybody!
