2 Raptor SATA in raid0, or single raptor + 120 GB IDE hard drive?

Hi, I'm trying to set up a new system after spending 4 years with my pentium3-550e @733Mhz.

I don't have any experience with Raid , but I'm trying to set up two WD raptors 36GB 10,000rpm in raid 0.

Recently, however, I came to think that 72GB might be just a bit small for me.. Not terribly small, but not enough either.

So what about single raptor (for boot up and programs) + 120 GB 7200 rpm IDE (for storage) ?

Will it be noticeably slower than two raptors in raid0 ? if then, should I go for speed or capacity?

I'll be getting P4 2.8 c with P4P800 delux, and I only use my computer for gaming, music, movie, and somtimes photoshop for photo editing.

Thanks in advance.

Why not two 120GB? If you get a reputable 120GB it will move data just as fast as the raptor. The raptors preformance only comes from its 10,000 RPM. That lowers the latency and thus the effective seek times. I wouldnt buy it. I think 240 GB is a much better investment for the future. The SATA RAID-0 will be crazy fast....~90MB/sec but DONT have a raid-0 array as the only storage in your computer. Sooner or later, you will loose all your data. Plus, your right. 72GB wont be enough storage.

*edit for elaboration*

RAID-0 2x120GB drives. It'll be about as fast (or maybe moreso) than a single Raptor, and will give you lots of storage. Back up essentials though. Reliability with RAID-0 is a compromise for the speed.

no it will not slow down your boot drive at all

I would just buy a motherboard with SATA controller, and run the raptor on SATA and the 120GB on standard IDE....no performance hits, and put programs on raptor, storage (music, vid's ) on the 120

but then again you want a raid setup, so go with with 2 120GB w/8MB cache drives in a raid setup...and skip the raptor, or go with my idea above . Personally I like my 1st idea

I run 120GB drive, and I have close to 70GB free.....so to me either one of these is lots of space

raptor + 120gb is what i'd go for.

as you can probably tell by the diversity of responses already, its really down to your own uses and preferences.

I have a question... Because I'm a n00b. 😉
Here is my Setup:

-P4P800 Delux
-P4 3.02 800 Fsb
-1Gig Corsair TwinX 3200LL
-36GB Western Digital 10,000 Rpm Raptor (Primary HD).
-120GB Western Digital HD.

My question is: Is a 7200 rpm raid faster than a single 10,00 rmp drive.

My reason for asking is because my friend has a slower computer (P4 2.4) but has a 180GB (7200 rpm) raid, yet his windows boot's at least twice as fast as mine (if you are counting the number of times the blue loader bar floats past the screen in windows XP boot up he gets about 3 and I get about 11). What can I do to speed up my boot up proccess? Will a SATA raid make that big of a diff?

Thanks for the info!

I have a Raptor and I can say it's definately worth the $102 I paid for it. It's worth the $135 Newegg sells new ones for too... definately get the Raptor and then another drive for storage.

Why don't you get 1 raptor for you boot & programs
and 2 - wd 120g se drives in raid 0 for everything else.

Hardware is dirt cheap nowadays.

Regards,
Jose

Just a suggestion....I'd probably knock that 2.8 down to a 2.4, save some cash and put it towards the drives. Maybe that'd help you in getting 1 raptor and 2x100 or 2x120 8mb cache drives. To be honest, 100GB drives will tickle your fancy just right.

Raid 0 is as mentioned not the most reliable form of storage, now why have 240gb of storage room in raid 0. Personally I will be upgrading my drives soon, 2 raid0 raptors for Windows and installed apps. I will also have some larger and "slower" non raided ide drives for storage.

If money is an issue go 1Raptor + 1WD

EDIT:
Off topic, I couldn't figure out your signature MangoTBG.
It says you have a Zalman 7000Au, now the chemistry classes I actually remember say Al=Aliminium, Cu=Copper, Au=Gold

Is your HSF actually gold or is that a typo/mixup (Al /cU)??

I am currently running 2 WD Raptors in RAID 0 off a Asus A7N8X deulxe and a 60GB IBM 60GXP as storage. I used to run 2 60GXPs in RAID 0 until one of them failed. A single Raptor has far better access times and makes everything more peppy than with the IDE RAID I had. For a single Raptor max transer is a bit lower, but in my opinion the access times are really what makes the difference. As for RAID 0 Raptors, performance is noticably faster than a single drive, but not all that big in day to day operations. Personally, I do not need all of the storage as I have all of my media stuff on another computer that is going to be set up as a server shortly, so I am very happy with my setup. If you do need all of the storage I would go with a single Raptor for your OS/ programs and current photoshop work and a large 8mb cache 7200RPM HD for storage.
