2 Questions on setting up IRC server ?

1) I'd like to setup IRC on my HomeNet/LAN or one very discreet and private public server, how would I go about doing so on a win32 platform?

2) I'm having some problems sending files to my laptop from my desktop. The connection is using a public server and the two seems to be 'seeing' each other; can also send files from the laptop to the desktop, but desktop cannot reciprocate. I'm thinking it's a setting in the firewall on the desktop which is doubled as a ICS. FW settings on the laptop is default. FW on desktop is augmented slightly from enabling the ICS which subsequently added some new protocols.

Help please?

Thanks

1. The last time I checked, the Win32 IRCDs were pretty bad. But that is what you need to look for, an IRCD.

Can you elaborate on "bad" ? I'm merely using it for internal use with file sharing basically, possibly to gain setting it up experiences as well. In bad, some people choose to compare unix apache to windows apache.

If it is all internal it may be ok. I have just heard of stability problems with them. Do a search on the topic, I found a bunch of links to ircds in a thread a few months ago. Maybe one of those will work for you.

I may have to. Google hasn't turned up any cherrys, the ones that did were all in foreign language; one specifically was dubbed "PURE" IRCD Win98. Wonder if it's compabitle with XP.

Trying Anand search now...

Ok no such luck with the search on here.

I managed to find a link to a download. 275KB file took nearly 2 minutes going at 3-5kbit/sec. Server must've been on a 56k modem.

It matters considering that most ircds simply do not run on "M$".

Setting up an ircd is P - I - T - A, at least all of the ones I've used. ngircd works ok, but is very immature and has few features.

the only ircd for win32 that i know of is unrealircd. Most people run it on *nix. a friend of mine linked his irc server with criten, he used bahamut.

It shouldn't matter, but it does. Win32 authors do not see IRC as much of a necessity as *nix software authors.
