Do you find it weird at all, that it took until 1992 for the Catholic Church to admit the earth rotated around the sun?

And how much do you believe what the Catholic Church says? Are you pretty strict followers of what the Pope decrees?

#1, true or false, is like saying that you can get put in jail for having sex on sunday in some places. sure it's on the books, but no one pays any real attention to it.

#2 - the church, being a human institution, can be wrong. i think the pope can be as infallible as he wants on matters of faith, but matters of morality are not 100% crystal clear and the church will not be correct 100% of the time

But to play devils advocate, plenty of people have blind faith to whatever their religious leaders tell them.

That's why it's called faith... like it or not, some people choose to believe in a higher power or being... I'm Roman Catholic, though i do not practise, and have not for a long time.

It really couldn't bother me in the least what some people believed way back when. Does it bother you that the Chinese still think 4 is an extremely unlucky number, or that Buddhists believe the Dalai Lama is the physical reincarnation of the same person? Why just pick on religious views you find weird, why not pick on Candian fascination with Hockey, or American fervour over football..??

Do you have a link of proof to the first one? I went to catholic schools as a child and in my science classes I don't recall anyone ever claiming that the earth did not rotate around the sun.

They didn't stroll around refuting the fact, but the delayed publicly accepting that the earth rotated around the sun until recently. However, I don't remember the exact date.

Ha so you like to just pull facts out of your ass

Basically :)

No, I was pretty sure I had read it a few times and learned it in world history, and the articles linked on this page only validify my assumption.

i believe mostly in what it has to say, but question some of them at the same time.

I admire the fact that Catholics are concerned about topics of social justice, especially at my university (Villanova). It's this aspect of the religion that strengthens my christian beliefs

as far as infallibility is concerned and the pope, he is not 100% right on anything, as he is just human.

the pope can only make infallible statements that are based on faith (i think), for example, i think the only infallible statement that the pope has declared is some feast day for Mary.

the only things i find myself not aligned with the church is some issues such as the fact that catholic priests can't get married, contraceptives, and premarital sex (im guilty of this :p )
