Saw this on the Global Computer Outlet site, but if you don't have a local global computer outlet (only Naperville, IL), you can order from Tiger Direct...

You can view the two pack here.

Please note this package includes one PCI only card with what appears to be a desktop antena, and one PCMCIA card with a PCI to PCMCIA adapter.

Not a bad deal to startup a small wirelss lan between two desktops or a desktop and a laptop. You can always sell the PCI to PCMCIA adapter for $20 or so on Ebay.

wow this set is $230 on USR.com e-store!

I'm seeing a lot of good deals on 11mbps wireless adapters these days (like the $10 after rebate USB wireless adapter on Amazon a week ago...sold out now).

Anyone have the low-down on what's going on in the wireless world? Is 22mbps about to replace all the 11mbps stuff?

is that starter kit eligible for the $30 USR rebate ?

I believe the PCI adaptor is USR specific and can not be used with other card ?

Pls advice..

will the U.S. Robotics Wireless PCI Adapter work with other PCMCIA devices?

It has been said in other threads that the pcmcia adapters for these cards are cut down versions of a true pcmcia slot and won't work with other devices, although you can get desktop pcmcia slots which support all pcmcia devices...

Some companies have come out with 22mbps 802.11b using compression, but the wave of the future is really 802.11a and 802.11g as both are faster than 802.11b and of course both have advantages/disadvantages. The more main streem wireless networking becomes the cheaper the hardware becomes and also new technologies bring down the prices of older technologies. Remembering back to 10 years ago, a 10mbps ethernet card could easily run you $150... As little as 4 years ago a 10/100 ethernet card could easily run you $120... Now you find them every weekend for $5 or even free after rebate... In a few years wireless will hopefully be at the same place...

Edit: This is a really good deal, I just bought basically one of these for $60 and was very happy with the price I paid... wish I would've waited a week and I could've gotten 2 for a little more... oh well..

Question, if anyone has this particular pci adapter and nic, how far does the farthest thing that sticks out of the pci adapter come out? I'm looking to put this in a modded case that has very little room past the end of the pci slot metal frame piece and want to know if this would fit... The picture is very poor quality, it looks like it will be too far, but it doesn't show if the pc card is pushed all the way in or not and if the connector that connects the antennae to the pc card can bend downward or if it is stiff and has to stick straight out.. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it!

Don't know for sure about how far out this card sticks specificall. Generally from what I have previously seen (my own dwl-650 from D-Link for example) the wireless cards stick out beyond the pci slot by about 1 to 1.5 inches.

Thanks for the feedback, but what I was wanting to know was how far the nic with the external antennae on it (I have 2 pcs with wireless nics on them with the built in antennae, but one of the the dlinks pictured here has no built in antennae, instead it has a movable external antennae).

Anybody else?

RDMustang1, i'm wondering the same thing, how long the cable is etc on that one card... no good pics/info online =(

hmmm....I'm using a USB connector right now, but I've been looking for a PCI adapter. I actually have that same PCMCIA card already, so I'd have to sell it or something.........anybody want to split a set? 🙂

EvilYoda : i've heard the usb wireless units are preferred over the pcmcia/pci as you can place the antenna anywhere, and it moves the antenna out of the electronically noisy PC & case. and you can move it from comp to comp easier. so i'm just curious why you want to get rid of it?

is the performance or range worse... or what?

Only 1 pc card??

I was going to get this set for my stepdad to do an adhoc connection with his PocketPC and Desktop and use ICS so he can bet the ponies from the couch...

BUT: If I am reading this correctly the set consists of 2 adapters and 1 pc card so one would have to purchase another PC card correct?

I think I'd rather buy him the $59 900-AP Access Point and Dell 1150 pc card for about $10 more...

From TigerDirect:
The Robotics 11Mbps Wireless Network Starter Set contains two Wireless PCI Adapters. One of these adapters includes a removable 11Mbps Wireless PC Card (for use with a notebook computer). The other adapter has an external antenna.

It looks like you get two PCMCIA cards, and one desktop (PCI) adaptor.

Question: Can I share a cable modem connection between my desktop and my roommate's notebook using only these cards, or do I also need to buy a wireless router? Thanks

Aar0n,

Look carefully at the picture on Tigerdirect.com.

It appears as you are getting the following:
2 PCI to PCMCIA Adapters
1 PCMCIA Wireless Card With Built in Antena (what we generally consider a standard PCMCIA wireless card)
1 PCMCIA Wireless With Desktop Antena (connected via a cable to a PCMCIA Card)

yellowperil, Yes you can. You will have to set up your PC for Internet Connection sharing. Then your PC will act as a router... roommate's pc goes to yours, yours routes him to the internet.

Search the Windows help on how to set it up.

take at look at the Tiger Direct website it seems to definitely be 2 PCI cards... i think they must have just updated this webpage with more information due to emails/calls or something...

US Robotics 11Mbps Wireless Kit w/ 2 PCI Adapter Cards (802.11b Compliant)
What's Included:
U.S. Robotics Wireless PCI Adapter with removable PC card with built-in antenna (for desktop or laptop)
U.S. Robotics Wireless PCI Card with external antenna (for desktop)

I purchased 2 orinoco cards for a $52 each shipped from dell. They had a 20% automatic and %5 discount coupon going on a few weeks ago in software/periphs with free shipping. They are labeled dell truemobile 1150 but they are just rebadged orinoco. GREAT performance so far, I can go all around the house and outside 90% of time the strength staying at full green bars (I think its 4 or 5 bars total), occasionally one bar less than full, still green. Orinoco is great stuff. I have it paired with the linksys WAP11 actually.
