Hey all,

Near the end of January, I will be in NYC for a continuing legal education seminar. I will have 2 nights free to roam the city. My hotel is on avenue of the americas just 6 blocks from Central park.

Anyone have any suggestions for what I can see in a reasonable time from that location? I'm thinking about checking out the trump tower, central park, and some other nearby places. I even applied for tickets to Letterman (though I am not holding out much hope).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would also be interested in restaurant recommendations.

Also, how old are you? I ask because, if you're a youngin, walking around the Lower East Side is a lot of fun, but tedious for the over 30-crowd

Depends what your budget is ... given by what you have posted, I'm assuming a modest budget

Here's what I recommend:

  1. Start off at Rockefeller Center - go to the "Top of the Rock" if you want (better than Empire State). Nintendo world if you're into that. St. Patrick's Cathedral is across the block
  2. Walk from there to Times Sq.
  3. Walk to Bryant Park - free ice skating rink here for the winter
  4. Right beside that you got the New York Public Library - well worth it
  5. Eat pizza at Little Italy (43rd b/w 5th & Madison)
  6. Go across the block to Grand Central - grab a slice of Junior's cheesecake
  7. Hop on the 4 or 5 subway (inside Grand Central) and go to Battery Park
  8. Right beside the park, there is the Staten Island ferry (free). Hop on it - enjoy the great views of the Statue of Liberty and downtown NYC.
  9. Hop back into the 4 / 5 subway and go up to Fulton Street - check out the WTC site.
  10. Back into the 4 / 5 subway and go to Brooklyn Bridge
  11. You'll be hungry again, so get back into the same subway - except that you take the 6 train (local) to Astor Place. Plenty of cool places to eat at - I'd recommend Oh Taisho for Japanese street food or the $1 pizza from 2 Bros. Pizza.
  12. Go around the block to McSorley which is New York's oldest Irish bar to cap off the evening - you can chill and party in the same area, plenty of good bars and music.
I'm guessing that's at least a day worth ...

And yes, I'm a pro - having people visit all the time and expecting me to be a tour guide does that to you ^_^

Think I even have a map of the itinerary that I described somewhere, lemme dig it up

The list below is excellent. Also, when walking from Battery Park to WTC (instead of taking the 4/5 to Fulton), if you take the right streets you'll go right past the Wall Street Bull statue (at Bowling Green Plaza, everyone gets a picture with this thing!), the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall. As far as Broadway there is a show I like that's out right now called Rock Of Ages which is basically an 80's hair metal comedy show - it rules.

skip the museums I found them all the be a bore, and the Empire State Building is cool, but not worth the wait.

I'd check out broadway, maybe catch a show, grab dinner at a nice place, and if you can make it take a cab down to Chinatown and Little Italy. Of course you're going in Jan, so dress warm.

Not much to do in central park either.

GO to the empire state building at midnight. The lines are not big at all. Although, we did have to wait about 10 minutes to leave.

Go to the comedy cellar. Go. When the show is over, go upstairs to the cafe/bar and drink with the comedians. I met Dave Atell, was giving Sherrod Small some shit from across the bar. It's awesome.

Great suggestions! I will definitely try this. If you have a map and are willing to pass it along, please do.

I spend most of my time in Maine and Boston. Cold is not an issue.

And we can have a good hump session afterwards!!!

OP is a chick right?

OP is NOT a chick. Damn. This is the second forum where I have been mistaken for a woman. I'm a man, married with one kid and number two in the works.

Well, I saw the Sox reference in your nick, and I instantly thought "chick."
Go Yankees!
