Now that I got your attention I just got 2 new 5850's in my work that my boss ordered because his 2 26 inch screen's where having problems drawing big excel sheets. lol

I tried to explain to him that probably wasn't a video issue but oh well.

Am now very sad looking at both these cards cause they will never be used just going to sit and idle the rest of there life lol

I wish he wouldn't have any idea what fermi is lol

He only knew to order them because I sent him the link am the hardware guy in our office. the rest are programmers that just thrown away money on the hardware until I got here. They liked to just buy the best hp that they could get on cdw .

I just dream about taking these boys home for some crossfire action.

If he's clueless why would he know to wait or think that fermi cards would be any better for what he wants to do? Who's advising this guy on what he really needs?

Am the hardware guy I advise him but he's the boss so he can order whatever he wants.

He has a 8 core xeon workstation with 16gb of ddr3 ecc.

I think it's dual 5440's xeon's.

Lets say he likes to spend money I just have been tiring to get him to spend it on better stuff.

Swap them! Ill admit something that Im sure a lot of you will find fucked up...but the dad of one of my friends from back in the day needed a new video card cause he said his videos (most likely porn) was running slow. So instead of getting something low end he ended up getting a X800XT PE AGP...something that I knew he'd never fully use, if even use 1% of it...he asked me to install it...I had a old 9600SE...its been years since then and Ive never heard him say anything about, and he has gotten more PC's since then so the evidence is long gone.

Im just saying...2 5850's...does your boss even KNOW what he has? I mean, is he technically inclined to know the difference between these and say two 5770's? Hell, two 3850's?

Im just saying...no reason for people to have uber hardware if you could put it to better use...especially if it was billed to the company...

Yeah the other guy i worked with thought of that cause my 5770 is coming back from rma today but it's not worth getting fired over so it's a no go.

He would probably notice he's not stupid just not a big hardware guy he's a programmer and most of them I know stay in there own world.

Now am a big fan of switching hardware on new builds for like your mom when she won't know the difference. So order new stuff for you give her old stuff tell her it's new lol.():)

Here here! Exact thing with my mom...

Her: "My PC is slow"
Me: "Get 4GB Ram...you only have 1"
Her: "Will you order it? Hers my credit card"

I get a new 4GB kit...she gets my old 2GB...she will never notice, and hey...the PC is faster...so problem solved!

...Right, let's use someone's credit card, and then steal the merchandise they purchased, swapping it for something of lesser value!

Yes, these people will never use the hardware they bought to its full potential, but that doesn't give you the right to steal it. I've seen a lot of older people driving sports cars that surely are never used up to their potential. Does that give me the right to take their car and park mine it it's place?

Jtisgeek - good for you for thinking it's not worth losing your job over. AndroidVageta - you steal from your own mother? Really?

Wow.

I hate swappers. Some dick janitor went around to peoples' office computers and swapped the ram. They did their research too, because they replaced each computer with the correct amount of RAM, but it was slow as balls. Although, it did force our department to invest in a card reader system. Obviously this is quite a bit different than what you guys are talking about, but its still stealing. *wags finger*

Pfffft.. 5850's for Excel? Running Excel on anything more than a 24" monitor requires at least a 5970, if not two.

Oh, excuse my "silly," "cute," and "moronic" selective reading. That makes you both scumbags, then.

Good God. Do you guys really think it's funny to lie to your own family, causing them to spend extra for your own profit? It's one thing to screw over your boss, a complete stranger, or someone you dislike (not that it makes it morally right), but your own family... that's sick, in my eyes.

I bet you'd be pissed if sent in a laptop for repair or RMA and they swapped out the memory for a lower speed, swapped out the hard drive for a less-preferred manufacturer, and replaced the wifi card with whatever (functional and comparable, but less valuable) junk they had laying around. After all, you wouldn't know unless you opened it up and looked for yourself, or ran a before and after synthetic benchmark to track the performance difference. And since you'll never notice, that's perfectly ok, right?

Well sorry this thread got off topic. Since when is everyone so serious on the internet lol

I understand your example on the laptop but that's not what we were saying. Also sadly I use to work at a best buy repair factory and you don't want to know what goes on with your laptop my not be parts taken but it was very common when a hard drive goes out that it get switched with the same size drive noone ever bothers to look at the specs of the old drive.

Wireless card is bad grab one from the used part bin that will work with that model.

So basic you described it perfectly your good.

On family it's not stealing it's selling them all-some computers very cheap so you can justify spending money on new stuff for your self.
Cause my mom really cares that the chip I give her is a couple of months old and I bumped up to the next speed.

It's one thing to do this and they are aware and are ok you are doing this, but you are making all of their decisions for them. Either tell them what you are doing, or charge them for the fair market value for your used parts. Anything else is fraud IMO.

Crossfire or SLI is not worth it IMO. Because the performance gain isnt 2x fast,, better to save money on the next new card which will pown their last gen xfire hehhe

Yeah, this is kinda pathetic...

This conversation should go:

Her: "My PC is slow"
Me: "You need more RAM. I was planning on doing an upgrade on my own system, and you could use the RAM I have now if you could put some cash towards my upgrade."
Her: "Whatever you think, son. As long as I can play 'Lost', I'm happy. I love that show, the fat one makes me laugh."

Damn, you stole from your mom basically. I'd feel pretty damn guilty even though she'd never know the difference most likely.

Depends on the comparison. Sure, 2x5770 isn't twice as fast as a single 5770. It is as fast as a single 5870 though for less money. About $100 less ATM.
