I recently found 2 large hidden files in my root directory that scandisk doesn't catch.
hiberfil.sys - 392,820kb
pagefile.sys - 393,216kb

Anyone know what these might be?

Turn off "Let windows manage page file"

I turned off the hibernation option.

Can you tell me more about the pagefile stuff? What it is/does and how to turn it off.

Uh...don't delete your page file...that would be bad. Running without a page file will slow down your computer quite a bit.

IF you delete you page file.. the computer will make a new one. when you restart..

Just rename it to see for yourself.

Hibernation is when your computer totally shutsdown and then resumes from the same state....With all programs still running again.

A useless feature. Just close everything and turn off your computer if you're not going to use it. ..

GO here for more info on hibernate

OMG IT'S A VIRUS! YOUR GONNA DIE!

JK.

It's the page file.
You know...swap file? It's a bit of disk space that is used to hold data that doesn't fit in RAM. You can turn it off by going into Computer Mgmt and setting it to zero, but Win2k usually barfs on you when you try this.

Honestly, if you don't know what a page file is, then you're probably better off not fuxing with it.

Hibernate is good on a notebook when you don't want to kill your battery wasting time to get back where you were before but on a desktop usually only suceeds in screwing things up instead of working.

Yeah, I know what hibernation is...

I've also been having memory mangement problems lately when playing media. Will dumping the pagefile.sys and having windows create a new one help clear up some problems?

Clean up the harddisk a bit, then defragment it. That should help.

Or try splitting the partition and putting the swapfile on the new one.

i'm running 384 mb ram, which explains why the pagefile.sys file is 384. I dropped the virtual mem down to 100 and i'll try a defrag.

So I guess you didn't think posting this question in the Operating systems forum right before you posted it here was enough, huh?
