In a press release Thursday, Blockbuster, the No. 1 video and games rental chain, said any walmart.com or Netflix subscriber will get the two-months' free membership plus a free DVD of their choice if they switch instead to Blockbuster.

Blockbuster will also offer customers who switch services a one-year membership at the same price they are currently paying Wal-Mart or Netflix.

I have tried Blockbuster twice, once when they first started and then again after they had been up and running awhile. I went back to Netflix both times. The turn around time with Netflix is much better than Blockbuster. Blockbuster could offer me there service for $5 a month and I would still not switch. I am very happy with Netflix and would never go back to Blockbuster. I tried to like Blockbuster because of the 2 free in store rentals but I just could not deal with the crappy turn around time.

Both netflix and blockbuster have a slow turnaround so it doesn't really matter to me. I'm using blockbuster myself right now.

I have a friend whos a member of blockbuster and he says the turnaround is horrible. At times he just never gets the movies and has to call them again so they can resend it.

Blockbuster is pretty shtty in sending out dvd's.

They never come together.
Lets say 3 dvds go out the same day (supposedly) on Friday. I get 1 dvd mon 1 on tues and 1 on wed.

it's such a pain in the ass

Not my experience with BB. I had Netflix for 6 plus months and they got slower and slower. I've now had BB for about 4 months with much better results. I get fewer short and long waits on my queue and my turnaround time is much quicker than NF. I also pay less and get two instore rentals each month which I usually try to use on a two disk set. I think I got labeled a power user with NF and the service got worse and worse as time went by. BB service seems to have actually gotten quicker than it was the first month or two.

Hmmm...according to Techbargains.com, Walmart just shut down their DVD rental service and is encouraging users to move to Netflix.

I've loved netflix. living near a dist center, we can send a movie monday morning and have a new one on wednesday. but with the new merger, i may have to try out blockbuster. just can't send $ off to wal-mart. its a shame.

I had been with Netflix for a few months and had no issues with relatively fast turn around. But then they didn't have a DVD I wanted where Blockbuster had it. So I signed up for one of BB free 1 month trial and put a few DVDs on my queue.

I received the first shipment reasonably fast and about on par with Netflix but one of the DVDs was actually not the one I had requested. Netflix had never sent me the wrong DVD in months of service. The first bunch of DVDs from BB had a wrong DVD so I ran the free month and cancelled. With the turn-around, 1 wrong DVD per month would about make up the difference in price with respect to Netflix so I decided it wasn't worth it. YMMV but that and the BBB unsatisfactory rating of BB online is not encouraging me to give it another shot.

LOL I cancelled NetFlix after 6 weeks and used that email to get a "unique" 2 month blockbuster code. Free movie rentals, oh boy!

I'm not sure the "blanket statements" are inherently useful.

I live 20 miles from a Netflix distribution center (Greensboro, NC) and 120 miles from a Blockbuster distribution center (Charlotte, NC). If I mail from home the turnaround was IDENTICAL. If I mail from a post office it varied.

I'm inclined to say Netflix has a better selection but after the first 500 or so rentals (yeah, I was an early adapter) movies stick around in my queue for a LONG time.

Other than losing your queue, I would recommend anyone to give the other services a try. "Free" is "free" and you can always go back.

For 2 free months I'll just cancel my netflix and restart it right away. Can anyone think of a reason not to?

I had Blockbuster online for 5 months (first 6 weeks free). I was very happy with the turnaround until they started thottling me in the last couple of weeks before I cancelled last month.

With my new "2 months free" account (new email address, new credit card), I can't complain. :D I'll cancel it long before throttling kicks in again.

I've got a friend who apparently uses Blockbuster on-line rental service and they received a letter in the mail accusing them of trying to copy one of their rental movies.

I've never heard of this before.

How unique is this code ?

Budarow... how could they possibly know if someone tried to copy a dvd ? Unless he gets like 20 dvds in a day and they all go out that same day.
