2-Liter Bottles Of Soda -- Hidden Meaning?

EthanHunt

Banned
Nyah and I were discussing the design on the bottom of most 2-liter soda bottles. I said that I felt it was a daisy (find an empty bottle and look down inside of it) because it had 5 "pettles" and an inner part as well.

Care to share your thoughts, Anandtech'ers?

anyone remember a few years back when the bottles used to have the plastic cylinders around the bottom?

Yes I do, compadre. I believe they were black and served the purpose of disguising the stains that most of the typically volatile colas could induce from sitting at the bottom of the bottle for several weeks.

I thought when they had those plastic things on the bottom the bottles themselves were completely round... thus if you took the plastic (bottom cap) part off you couldn't stand the bottle on end. Thus, my suspicion is that they came out with a better manufacturing method that's cheaper. I don't know why they have the 5 petals instead of just a flat bottom, but, probably has something to do with plastic manufacturing and strength.

yup yup, they were round. I think the current shape is just for strength...if it was flat, it would dent too easy.

Yeah, I remember those old ones. It usually had black or green round thing attached to the bottom with glue. The PET bottle itself was semi-spherical and it wouldn't stand up when you take off the bottom. Those bottles are meant to be a pressure vessel and spherical bottom have very high strength.

The new ones have pettles instead, because flat bottom would bulge out under pressure and burst or tip over. The bottom has to withstand hundreds of pounds of pressure without bulging and those containers are pressure tested for safety. I'd say pressure inside Coke bottle can get up to as high as 30psi on hot days. multiply that by area of bottom(pi r^2).

Anyone remember when soda can's were like soup cans. Same on top as they were on the bottom, Both top and bottom soldered on. And the side's were smooth?

I thought not... 😉

I used to use them for tennis ball cannon's. That was "COOL".. 🙂

i remember them, there was no such thing as a pop-top back then; i think my mom still owns one of those old can openers. same thing for beer. 🙂

Seems to me that the bottles were that same shape when the bottom cap was on which made them appear round.
I think they found that it was cheaper just to eliminate the bottom cover cap.

i used to buy those but i havent seen them in stores in a long time

Don't you know? It's a phallic symbol, designed to covertly undermine the male population's confidence (and spur sales: buy what you don't have or are lacking) while the femmes consume, consume, consume! What a clever design...

😀

They have always tried to find cheaper manufacturing techniques for bottling. Take for instance the can of soda.

At first, you have the 3 piece. Top piece, bottom, and one flat sheet for the cylinder. Then they found a cheaper way to manufacturer. By stamping process, they were able to make the bottom and cylinder piece out of one piece of aluminum. And then there's the top piece. They have tried to make this out of 1 piece but no one has yet developed a method for this. If you are able to develop a manufacturing process that can reduce the cost of manufacturing for these companies you will be a multi millionaire. Guaranteed

As for the bottoms, i think that's possibly a safety issue just like cans have a dimple in the bottom. Also it is possible that they developed the bottle design for structural and packaging/shipping reasons.

yeah the bottles were'nt round on the bottom. they were still the "daisy" design but just with a cap over it.

Ditto. maybe they figured that if one the the "petals" were dented in, it wouldn't stand up anymore so they capped it to protect it. Then they found out it was very hard to dent the bottle to the point where it wouldn't stand on it's own and removed the cap and to save money and resources.

My friend would buy one of those, but only if it contained 30 liters of Absolut 😉

:Q"We're phasing out the smaller cans and bottles, as well as two-liter sizes," Hertner said. "We're confident that people will take to the new 30-liter size. :Q

Wow!. Are they NUTS? What makes them think that average consumer would go buy a 30gallon(Idon't think 30L is correct) coke that goes flat within 17min once opened?

I also don't understand why it would weigh 267lbs. Assuming Coke doesn't weigh that much more than water per ml, 30L of coke weighs 66Lbs. Give it 10lbs for container and its still only 76lbs.

Maybe they're mistaken for 30Gallon??
30gallon=113.55liters=250lb and 17lbs for container will give you 267lbs.

I somehow doubt its an authentic, because I don't think they would mistake liters for gallons.

Jerboi,
TheOnion.com is a news parody site. It didn't seem like you caught on to this, so I'm letting you know that it's a joke (if you DO know this, sorry).

The 2 liter plastic bottles are made by various manufacturers. One is the Eastman Chemical Corporation. The bottles are made (in a much smaller size) and then attached to an air compressor...then they're blown to the size and shape of the mold they're in. The design of the 5 petals on the bottom is for added strength and was engineered to keep the bottle from tipping....as 4 feet would allow the bottle to tip easier (since the feet aren't spread out enough).

<< "The three-liter didn't fail because it was too big, but because it was not big enough," Coca-Cola CEO Vic Hertner said. "With our new 30-liter size, that won't be a problem. Two liters is nothing. I could urinate two liters for you right now. But 30 liters? That's untouchable." >>

ROFLMAO pissing 2 LITERS?!?yeah...riiight!!!...I piss a half gallon ALL the time:Q

btw...Shasta Cola still makes 3 liter bottles

pretty soon they will be stocking the 2-litre bottles in the coolers at convenience stores.

years ago, they started with 8oz, then 12oz, then 16oz, etc. now they're up to 1-litre bottles.
