2 Internet connections=double speed?

Hey everyone,

I've got a standard cat5 cable running from a router, attached to a cable modem for the internet.

However, I just got a wireless card so I could connect my friends next-door. I have a strong signal, and I'd like to make these two connections work together--if that is possible.

I've tried the bridge connection thing in Windows XP Pro, but I don't know if that improves performance or just links the networks.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,
Adam

just connects 2 networks. Does not double your Internet speed. Broadband is shared access so your cable and your friends cable are all (probably) on the same run so your already sharing bandwidth. No way I am aware of to multi-link your cable with the neighbor. You'd need support on the other end which you won't get.

Best scenario (and not that much difference in performance to you) is to get a Router with 2 Wan ports and the Router IOS will automatically send traffic to the one with the highest bandwidth. You will not get double the bandwidth.

Otherwise these are your options: Combining two Internet Connections - Combining Bandwidth, or and Load Balancing of two Internet connections.

Actually, I find clicking my heels 3 times works really well. :D

There's no place like 127.0.0.1... There's no place like 127.0.0.1... There's no place like 127.0.0.1... :)

ROFL!!!!!
I just got back from repairing a computer that had gotten nailed by bagle worm, and the hosts file was full of loopback entries for all the antivirus subscriptions and webpages.

Thanks for the laugh!

There used to be a company that sold a little router with 2 WAN ports. You could plug two modems, two cable modems, or one of each into the router. For a single file transfer there was no benefit, the single connection would go to just one modem, but if you had two transfers going on at once, it would send each to a different modem. Perfect for downloading a file while you play an online game at the same time. Or perfect for multiple downloads. Or perfect for multiple computers in your home.

I can't remember who sold it, it wasnt' cheap and it's now off the market as Symantec bought the company and turned their products into funky yellow firewalls.

If you really want to do this, it can be done with a Linux or BSD machine with 3 NICs and some patience for configuring the software.
