Pretty stupid to do this....make you take an online summer course or something to get where you can take ap calc..

Graduate and go to college. You can take all those classes in college.

I know, but wont it look better to colleges if I already have those courses?

It really doesn't matter all that much. I mean, almost all colleges offer PRE-calc...that should tell you the expected level of math knowledge for freshmen.

I didn't take calc until college. NO problems getting in.

If it bugs you that much, you can take it through community college and save some money.

Jeez, Im just asking for some help. No need to get all flustered. I can see why the mods gave you a vacation after your post in the politics and news.

But last time I checked, putting more work into something was a dumb idea. Even though in this case, I could probably put that work to better use.

It seems unanimous. I am not going to make a decision completely over your advice, but it has greatly helped, and I thank you all!

I really tried not to get a "flusteredd" up, but you really need to think about what would be going through your head as you walk down those high school halls knowing that you shouldn't be there. You'll be 19, a grown ass man, and walking down the same halls as a bunch of little brace faced kids, while you should have been at a college, with other adults.

My previous post was as nice as I could put it. I was being REAL modest as how I "smart" of an idea I think that is.

Think about how weird and uncomfortable it is to walk through your old elementry school or middle school now as a high schooler. That's what your high school will be like the summer after you graduate. You'll feel like "bah, high school, stupid little kids." You'll feel more uncomfortable than you ever have been in your entire life if you stayed a 5th year.

Just try to think ahead about what it would be like.

I wouldn't recommend it. Hell, I didn't even do 4 years in high school. I skipped my junior year and graduated with the class ahead of me. Instead of spinning my wheels for a wasted year of high school, I started college a year early.

1. finish highschool and go onto college and do whatever you want in between or simultaneously.

if you want to go into the 'computer field,' as you put it, basic computer repair, especially for someone that doesn't ahve it in their blood, will get you no where and will not be somethign worht putting on your resume.

get out of highschool and into college as fast as you can, and then see where that takes you. college is where it really begins.

This is probably the one thread where I absolutley agree with JLGatsby (I can't even believe I'm saying this).

A second senior year of high school seems like the stupidest idea ever, especially when you could just go to college. Maybe if you NEEDED the second year to be able to get into college, MAYBE, but otherwise it is pointless.

You clearly got the opinions on that 5th year of high school. Man kids these days and their AP classes on here. Even when I was in HS taking a couple I was never obsessed with them and acted like they were the best thing ever. It doesn't matter when you get to college.

So my advice is to graduate normally, hopefully getting at least Pre-calc/Trig in during your senior year, then spend 1 yr at a community college doing Calc1/2 and other introductory classes like Rhet & comp, Physics 1/2, etc.. This will save you a lot of money and headaches and you'll be set pretty damn well for university (longs you make sure those credits will transfer, all 31 of my comm. college credits did to university).

Reconsider immediately. Which colleges are you looking at anyway? If you're looking at top tier colleges, you shoulda been able to reach the APs by senior year without an extra year in highschool. Otherwise I don't think you qualify for colleges like.. MIT. I'm sure you're a hardworking student and that's great but you're still behind the students who are actually taking APs in their senior year. As long as you have some extra curricular.. maybe an award or two.. reasonably high GPA or SATs.. you should be fine. Bottom line: go to college.

GRADUATION FTW. An extra year isn't worth it... for one thing, those AP classes can be done in one semester at college. For another, not all schools take the AP credits.

it's kinda like what I did during my junior/senior year... I managed to crap an effective 6 years worth of english and history courses by double-ing up on electives during my last two years.

seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect, total waste of time. I'd have gotten into my first choice school just as easily without them and I probably learned more in English 101 in college than in all "6" years of english courses in prep school.

Yeah seriously, doing 2 senior years is retarded, and AP's don't prepare you for upper division course work, take it from someone who started college with 30 credits. Have fun your senior year, get some AP work in to skip the easy classes, then go to college and have study.

Fixed for you. If you want to party, join the Navy.

Why not apply to the schools you want during your senior year...then if you dont get into any school you want to go to, take another year, or better yet take a year at community college, then re-apply?

If you need more courses before you goto college, why not take some online courses? Also, as recommended above, it is highly likely you can take the courses you need while you are in college. It would be quite ackward being an adult in a children's school.

The way I see it: I recommend college for you now. However, if you really have your mind set on it, then go for it. When colleges look up applications, they look up things like the number of mathematics classes and science classes you have taken. More classes may or may not help, but it most certainly will not hurt. I am a firm believer in education(not necessarily the current system for it though). The more you know, the better off you will be.

what difference would it make? You will be in college. The only advantage i see to this is having more free time to try electives. You will just be wasting 1 year of your life. if you were so concerned about college credits and looking good, you should have took some classes at a community college.

Seems like a terrible idea to me. Those supposed accelerated classes are similar to the intro courses at college. They may see it as a sign that you like to learn, but more than likely they will see it as procrastination and not being ready for college.

2nd senior year? wtf?

just do one year and just be happy that you'll be graduating with all your friends 2nd semester. thats probably going to be the highlight of your high school career, honestly. no point in taking all this AP crap and do a 2nd year. just do as many APs as you can/want in junior/senior year and go to college. colleges will have mixed feelings about you if you do 5 years in high school. take it from a friend who knows a person who has done this in a somewhat similar way and is kind of overwhelmed by all of the work and he's going to burn out any second...
