I want/need/should make a file server out of some spare parts I have.. and a nice 166Mhz Pentium system is ready. I've managed 128MB of RAM, but only have a 2.7gig hard drive...

So, I want a new hard drive. Here's the q's:

First, does anyone know if old p54c socket 7 pentium boards had any drive size limitations? It's an HX chipset SuperMicro (an old server board, 6 SIMM slots and fll size AT, oh yeah).

Second, are there any resources for large drives that are quiet? I don't mind 5400RPM, but 7200 is good if it's quiet... I like IBM and Maxtor usually also -- so suggestions are welcome also.

Not sure about that specific board, but with most old mobos you're limited to around 8 gigs

I've got a Maxtor 20 gig 7200 rpm drive that's VERY quiet, can't even hear the thing when it's being accessed.

How old though, is the question.. if anyone had an HX board (or newer) with an 8gig limitation I'll get worried, but the only experiance I have with problems was an older FX based board.

i think there is an 8gb limitation. not exactly sure tho. i'm on my old comptuer right now... dual p166 on a tyan server board.

i agree with yzzim... get a maxtor. i have a 60gb and i couldn't hear it at all until i turned off quiet mode. it was super speedy in silent mode, and a slight performance increase using normal mode.

Hmm, I was thinking of getting a cheap promise card anyway, to JBOD a few old drives... it'll work out well that way.
