2 Gb ram or 7800gt?

Whats the price difference between the 2? I say go with the RAM. The 6800GT will run those games just fine (especially oc'd) unless you are into 16x12 and above resolutions and an AF/AA fanatic.

Somehow it double posted the thread sorry about that!

I'm guessing the 7800gt will drop to $400 (usd) or less in the next 2 months (since i have 90 days to do the step up program) So I'm guessing I would have to pay around $130 with tax and ship included. I'm returning my 1gb ram since its defective so If I get the 2gb it would cost me $123. So there isn't much of a price difference...

I'm in the same boat you are, university soon so no more job for me, and no more income, I will only have enough money to sell my X800XL and buy a 7800GT...or keep my X800XL and just buy 2GB ram. Ahhhh I'm guessing since I won't be playing many games then 2GB is the way to go.

I'm betting that the price of 7800GT will drop faster than ram, esp when ATi release their next gen (hopefull soon), and that the 6800GT is sufficient for any games now, so... 2 GB ram!

? But wudnt the 7800GT allow him to play at a higher resolution with max settings? a 6800GT can't do that and get a decent fps in games like BF2/F.E.A.R

While I would also get the ram (I just orderd the 2x1gb Patriot CL 2 from outpost for $199) I definitly do NOT agree with the above statement. Even with a 6800GT benchmarks show the 7800GT will be a large improvement. The 2GB will have marginal effects in windows (not nearly as much as going from 512 -> 1GB) but it will have more use in future games or power hungry apps. BF 2 is about the only game out right now that you get signifigant improvement when using 2 GB.

Even with all the above I still say ram because of the price, the future need in games, and the fact that while a 7800GT will offer alot more performance, you would need to play a high res to notice it. If you are limited to a 1600x1200 or lower res then the 7800GT difference will be less and so not really worth it compared to the ram. Especially since ram prices are trending up and vid cards always go down.

Video card, especially if you like gaming. Contrary to a lot of what people are saying, having 2 GB of RAM will not "help everywhere". Right now it will help only a very small number of applications, and if your concern is gaming performance, 95% of the time you will see a bigger improvement with the new video card than you will see from the extra RAM.

I was running 1gb of memory in my rig and the FEAR demo load times were terrible... Everytime you turned a corner it was loading. When I installed the extra gig of memory, it ran very smooth. If you leave a gig of memory in that machine and upgrade to the 7800, while your overall frames will be higher, you will still have the terrible load times of the memory intensive games today.

you got that right ! load times stinks like.....overcooked....buttered pies!

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'll get the 2gb now and 7800gt later since none of the nextgen games are out yet, except Fear I guess?

couldnt you just sell your 6800gt for like 150-175 and buy the 7800gt with your own cash and use the money from the card you sold to buy some ocz ram or another company

I was thinking about selling the card, about the ram money I don't have a choice since monarch is only gona give me store credit for the defective ram im returning
