Seems like 1 GB of dual channel 2 GB kits are going down very fast in price but when will the 2 GB of dual channel 4 GB kits follow ? I want to go to 8 GB of ram.

yes supply and demand and such, most peeps don't need a 2gb stick of ram which is y the kits are so expensive, y do you need 8gb of ram? U would have to be using a 64bit os to utilize it or using vista

Oy veh. Here we go.

Once technology improves further to make higher density DIMMs cheaper to make, and demand for RAM increases with supply, then the prices will go down.

The best replies I have read about so far are games and virtual machines. One guy says he is going to make a BIG RAM drive for use with gaming and another says he uses multiple virtual machines daily.

As far as the price coming down, you can get a 2 x 2gb kit for about the same price as an average 2 x 1gb kit just 2 months ago. Pricing is pretty reasonable IMO.

4gig kits are going down, I got my 4gig ddr2 800 patriot for $225 a few weeks ago which was a great deal at the time (outpost now has it for $5 less and there is an OCZ kit for $180 after rebate).

I want to be able to run my PVR software in the background while I play the latest games.

What kind of software are you running that needs 8GB of RAM? And what kind of tuner do you have? If you have a hardware encoding tuner, you shouldn't need so much RAM.

I imagine that with 4GB of RAM and a decent processor, you should be able to run a game and watch/record TV just fine. 8GB just sounds unnecessary for such an application.

Just because you don't need it doesn't automatically mean nobody does. Multiple VMs, Huge Photoshop files, 3dsMax, or other such work can eat memory quickly. Vista can also use 4GB+ very effeciently.

How expensive are most motherboards that support 16 gigs of ram right now ? That would be really nice because ram drive are really quick! They even speed up the anandtech forums as long as the server isn't slow.

Vista 64 + Superfetch will put 8 GB to [generally good] use for even the basic users out there.

They are just about as much as 8gb boards but still only have 4mem slots.. as of yet havn't really seen 4gb sticks of ram out.. thatone is only 100 bucks, all depends on what ya need..

Don't buy 16GB of RAM to speed up the AnandTech forums. You'll be disappointed. Perhaps invest more in a higher speed internet connection, as that is most of the bottleneck in terms of browsing.
(Never thought I'd need to give that advice  ).

God, I'm so disappointed in you, Roguestar... why didn't you suggest a faster refresh rate monitor!? If he had a 2ms response time LCD, he could see Anandtech 3ms faster than a 5ms response time LCD! This is definitely a necessary time, just think of all the pages combined.

Not to thread crap, but I'd be inclined to suggest buying a 2GB stick for now, and another stick later if/when needed

I just bought 8 x 2GB DDR2 sticks for dual 8GB systems.

Fry's / outpost.com had a 4GB 2x2GB PC-4200 DDR2 kit on sale for $120 after rebate
a week ago.

Still today even better they have single DDR2 PC-5300 (667MHz) 2GB Patriot DIMMs
for $65 each DIMM after a $15 rebate.

Today also Frys / outpost has for $99 / DIMM a Patriot PC-6400 800 MHz 2GB DIMM
with no rebates.

Frys / Outpost also has for $79 a Patriot PC-4200 533 MHz 2GB DIMM with no
rebate, though this is not as good of a deal as some of the others I list are / were.

A couple days ago eWiz had single Super Talent PC-5300 667MHz 2GB single DDR2 DIMMs
for $72 each, free shipping, no rebate.

So the somewhat inexpensive 4GBy 2x2GB kits or single 2GB DIMMs are out there,
you just have to shop around and see what's for sale every day at the common
retailers that often have sale prices on RAM.

If you're looking for very fast PC-1067 or low timing CL3 / CL4 2GB memory or
whatever then you're going to have a lot harder of a time finding the very low prices,
but even so for many of even the high end 2GB single /4GB kit products things the prices
are as low as they have ever been AFAIK.

I'm not betting on the prices getting much lower than they have been in the past
week, and would not expect these low prices to continue past the next month,
but who knows, maybe it'll get even better for us consumers, but that seems unlikely
since the news is that the pricing of the mass producers is starting to rise again.

8GBy / motherboard is very necessary and practical for things like virtual machines,
large ramdisks / disk caches for engineering / database / file server applications,
high resolution 3D CAD modeling, scientific analysis, video editing, etc.

Look at applications like Folding @HOME or SETI @HOME, they use thousands of
PCs with a combined total of thousands of gigabytes of memory and thousands
of GHz of CPU speed at once, and still they could use a lot more computer power
than they now have by a factor of 100!

Though if your application is suited to multi processing, it may turn out to
be cheaper for the performance to grab 16 GB of the 1GBy DIMM kits, put
4x1GB sticks into a motherboard, a cheap CPU and cheap motherboard,
and run four of those systems in parallel working together over your LAN
in a Beowulf cluster if you're doing the kinds of tasks that such will be
effective for.

QuixoticOne wow I didn't realize how cheap 2 GB dual channel kits are now! Though if you don't need dual channel single 2 GB sticks are very cheap as well it seems though I agree that prices won't stay this low for long.
