So I got a 2 dollar bill in San Diego.

They are not very common. I wonder why.
I would prefer 2 dollar bills over the 1 dollar bill. I got to freaking many 1 dollar bills filling up my pockets.

I think they stopped making them in 79 or so. I have one locked away in my desk. I like $2 bills. Nice round #.

what is the date on your bill?

$2 Note Fact Sheet

The $2 denomination enjoys a rich tradition in American history. It first originated on June 25, 1776, when the Continental Congress authorized issuance of $2 denominations in "bills of credit for the defense of America." Under this authority, 49,000 bills of the $2 denomination were issued.

In 1928, the present size U.S. Note with the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, third U.S. President and author of the Declaration of Independence, was issued.

The Series 1963A note bore Jefferson on its face and Monticello on the reverse. The Series 1976 note features a portrait of Thomas Jefferson painted in the early 1800's by Gilbert Stuart and the back design is a vignette based on an engraved reduction of the painting, "The Signing of the Declaration of Independence," by John Trumbull. The Series 1976 note was printed to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial.

On September 12, 1996, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin was presented with a new series $2 bill. The 1995 series notes were printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing¹s Western Currency Facility and bear the seal of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. These notes carry the signatures of Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin and U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow.

Additional Facts

590,720,000 Series 1976 $2 notes were printed. As of February 28, 1999, $1,166,091,458 in $2 notes were in circulation world-wide.

You would have to replace every cash register.

I got a few $2 bills in my days in retail food service. The cash register didn't seem to have any issues. $2.79 is $2.79. It doesn't matter if they pay in pennies or $100 bills...

If I am not mistaken if you visit Monticello in Virgina they give you change in $2 bills. Its been a while since I lived in Virginia so it may haved changed. Its like the post office that gives $1 coins as change in the stamp machines.

There is not a physical space in the tray to store the $2 bills, so they either need to be intermingled with another denomination or stored under the tray.

ROFL.

Most drawers only have room for 4 or 5 different denominations anyway! So now you have to put 50s AND 100s under the drawer instead of just 50s?
Think out of the box!

$2 is perfect for a tip at a typical restaurant (just my wife and I). If they deserve a tip for service they get a nice shiny $2 bill. Yep $2 for any meal no matter what I purchase. If all I get is a salad, the waiter/waitress gets $2 tip. If instead I order an expensive dish - they get $2 for the same amount of work. Why should they earn less if I order fried chicken instead of roasted chicken?

Oh crap. I must have been sleeping the day they talked about currency in american government class.

Except you have to change "sleeping" with "flirting with cute brunette with nice butt".

When Marshall University was in the Southern Conference (I-AA), we felt we getting looked down upon by the comission and the baskeball tourney site, Ashville, NC. The year before we moved up into the big leagues (if you can coun the MAC as a "big" league, LOL), the whole campus and fans decided to pull a prank on them. The local banks exchanged our denominations for only $2 bills.

Anything and everything we bought, we paid with those Jeffersons. We choked their local economy and made national news as well.

Are Silver Certificates worth anything more than face value? A friend at work came across one and she saved it. I suppose it's a good novelty to have, like the $2 bill, but could it really be worth anything more years down the road?
