2 computers (xp) 1 switch

lol hey man... 🙂

I just (today) set up my own home network but using a HUB (Im sure its the same as with as Switch.

If you plan on just setting up a peer to peer network you will need to create a new user account on BOTH computers with the SAME username & password.

Once you have done that go into Network Connections and click on your n/w card and choose 'Set up a home or small office network' in the menu on the left hand side. Follow the steps and once you have finished you will need to log off on each computer (or you might have to restart..i cant remember).

Once you have done this repeat on the second machine!

Hopefully this should work!

If not just let us know 😛

Slick 😎

To network these machines, you need to either A) Install Netbui (non routable broadcast based protocol) or B) setup IP address. IP needs to have the exact same subnet mask, and numbers in the same range. the most commenly used is 192.168.0.X where X is a random number between 1 and 254. Set a unique IP with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and you should then be able to "ping" each other.

So how would i go about setting up the netbui??? I have done it before (a few years ago but i can't remember 🙁)

install it as a protocol on each computer's network adapter, then wait a few minutes and see if you can find one another.

How would i network these 2 pc's using a switch ????? i know there must be a way...apart from buying a router!
Buying a Router would not help you since a Router is a combo unit of Routing Circuit and a Switch, and the computers use the Switch.

I do not know how your system is connected.

The fastest way is to follow nweaver advice.

Otherwise, log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Link to: Windows Network - Installing & Sharing.

I tried installing the network adaptors and i still can't see the other pc

Here's my setup

CPU 1 ==============> SWITCH <=================CPU 2

both cpus are running xp pro

have you disabled the firewall on your xp pro machines. also when assigning ip addresses you need to assign a unique address to both machines IE: cpu1=192.168.0.5 cpu2=192.168.0.6

if you set these like so and still can't ping either one then you may have some bad hardware.
