2 combo drives with same problem

I have 2 laptops that I am currently working on that have the exact same problem. One laptop is a Compaq and the other is a Toshiba Satellite. Both have a dvd/cd-rw drive. The drives will not read a regular DVd, a DVD-R, a regular CD (data or audio), BUT will read a cd-r with either data or audio. I have taken a regular cd (Norton Systemworks) and tried it in both of the drives and neither will read it. I can take that disk to my desktop and it will be read fine. I rip a copy of it and both laptops will read the copy fine. Does any one have any idea on what is going on or what I can do to fix it? On one of the laptops I have ruled out a virus doing this by FDISKing the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP fresh. Same thing happened. Please help me with this matter as it is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

I talked to an online service person from Compaq and they sent me a file that I ran and it is working perfectly now. Go figure.
