2 basketballs, 1 hoop, same time?

I'm talking about fitting regulation size balls (including inflation) through a regulation hoop SIDE BY SIDE (not vertical). Can it be done? I found 2 sites online and both argue both ways. I could not find the regulation size for balls and hoops in the nba, only "about 9 inches" in diameter for a ball and 18 for a hoop.

Anyone know?

I tried it once and it wasn't even close unless they're underinflated.

I could have sworn that one of my basketball coaches demonstrated this fact. But, he may have psyched us by using two women's basketballs instead of regulation men's.

Does anyone know for sure? As in, can you provide a link to regulation sizes?

I found one that said the hoop is 18 inches in diameter, balls are UP to 30 inches in circumfrence. That means at MOST the balls are 1 inch away from fitting. You guys make it sound like it's half a foot off.

No you cannot. Look-up regulation sizes and you're done. A new Spalding Infusion ball, for example, at regulation (not junior) size has a circumference of 29.5". That's a diameter of 9.39". The rim is 18" < 2*9.39" wide. QED.

Edit: typo. Anyway, as for links, google is your friend (I can't believe we still have to say this... try "basketball regulation").

Edit 2: dangit another typo -- diameter, not radius!

I have seen it as well. I might end up having my college basketball coach tell me if it's possible, or better yet, try it myself.

I played basketball in high school, the hoop is pretty big. I would say that you could fit 2 basketball's through at the same time, although i'm sure it'd be a close fit.

I've seen it done, but it was in middle school so I assume it was not regulation balls.

No, you definately can not. It's hard enough getting one in there without it hitting the rim.

All the links say at most it's off by 1 inch for two balls. There's plenty of room for 1 ball.

if the balls had zero 'give' to them, then the answer is no, but since basketballs are rubber, it's quite conceivable that it could happen if the shots were from opposite sides...probably hard as heck to do, but should be possible....
