Fine print:

1 Reduced monthly fee offer and waived setup fee offer is open to new Merchant Solutions and Web Hosting customers only. Limit one offer per customer, and one use per customer on a single account. Offer expires on 12/31/2005 at 11:59PM and is available only through Yahoo! Small Business. Offers may not be combined with any other offers or discounts, separated, redeemed for cash, or transferred. Other terms and conditions apply; see the Yahoo! Small Business Terms of Service when you sign up.

Just FYI.

so what does the fine print mean? what exactly is the catch to just registering a domain? 2.99 is pretty tempting... Is it transferrable (to another nameserver)? Who actually owns the domain?

Fine print - dunno, just saying the offer is from now till 12/31/05.
Catch - none
Transferrable - yes, I have a domain that I bought from Yahoo and have since then transferred it to Dreamhost
Who owns it? - you I would think (the name that is).

Also, NO email account is included. I regreted going with them from day 1 & had to wait 60 days to transfer to Go Daddy.

The Yahoo! domains have been talked about fairly often. The cheapest they have gone is 1.99 per domain. The domains work just like any domain. Yahoo! holds the domain just like Network Solutions would. If you use them to forward to another host, they place an ad banner on your site at the bottom. If you use the DNS control panel to point at another name server (this is NOT a domain forward), there are no ads and everything works like it should. I host a test domain on my home webserver. Yahoo! points to my name server with ZoneEdit, so I have no ads.

Well, I'm in, thanks OP.

However, i've got a "starter page" up at the moment, and while my hosting (dreamhost) says it's taken control, and should have a page up.... all I'm getting is the starter page. Any idea how to get rid of that?

EDIT: do i need to change A and CNAME records to get this to point to the right place? Shouldn't I just be able to change the nameservers to the dreamhost nameservers (i've already told dreamhost about the domain) and that's it?

with Yahoo! domains, it shows your name, address, and phone number on the WhoIs, unless you pay like $10/year for their private registration, where it will show your name and some common address.

AFAIK, it's $2.99 a domain. Period.

I have a yahoo account with 2 domains on it and, while the first one initially said $2.99 and the second one initially said $9.99, I ended up paying $2.99 for both. I don't know if it's a bug in the system, but I did not have to pay the full price for the second one I ordered.

YMMV.

NOT

... $1.99 with any new, non-domain purchase....

Products must be new to the customer (not currently owned) to qualify. One 1 yr $1.99* .com, .us, .biz, .info, .name, .net, or .org domain per each qualifying product; new, transfer or renewal. Recurring billing charges, existing product and domain renewals, and domain backorders do not qualify as product purchases. Only qualifying domain names included in qualifying purchases are subject to discount.

Basically, in the fine print (and I called to complain recently) they say that if you buy hosting or some other service from them that you didn't already have, you may buy ONE domain for $1.99. If you want more than one, you have to by another "non-domain" service for each domain you want. Personally, I've no desire to pay $19.95 + $1.99 to get a domain I could get somewhere else for a fifth that price or less.
