Unfortunately in actual usage benchmarks 5:2 at tight timings with GAT enabled is faster than PC4000 1:1 with 3:4:4:8 timings - I ran the tests - unless you can run 1:1 with CAS 2.5, don't waste your money - See posts from thugs for more data. Synthetic benchmarks do not take into account latencies. GAT won't run with PC4000 memory at 250+ FSB speeds. Soory about the idiot - but getting rid of his memory for no actual performance gain doesn't make sense - getting better cooling and running at 250 does.
 
Well considering my 1GB of PC4000 cost me a total of $215 ($110 from Best Buy 2 weeks ago [back up to $199], $105 off of Ebay), and I was able to sell my PC3200 for around $350 (512x2 Corsair XMS)....and am benching at 6.1GB/s+ compared to around 5.2-5.3 before the trade......I would say that it has worked out well for me. You are right....GAT won't run for me with PC4000, and my timings are higher (SPD detects at 3-8-3-3, kinda confusing), but I didn't notice a big performance boost when I had the Corsair PC3200 with GAT.

We put everything into benchmarking.......without benchmarking would there even be overclocking?? Perhaps.....but to the point where watercooling is almost required these days for a respectable overclock. We base everything off of synthetic testing....and my synthetic testing shows that my PC4000 at 500mhz (1:1) and with big number timings beats my old PC3200 at 200mhz (5:4 ratio) with little number timings.

BestBuy offering 512mb of PC4000 RAM at $110 a few weeks ago was the hottest deal I've seen on anandtech yet. I am much appreciative for whoever actually went to the bestbuy website to find that out (maybe they were an employee 😕 )

Now that?s some good info. Everyone that suggested 2.8e, you got it. I don't know how I missed it, just never looked I guess. I bought this from one of thoughts places that keep the stock in the back and they bring it up to you. It was the right price, 189 on sale.

Get a better heatsink and some AS3 and you should be set.
Then set her to 250fsb using the 5:4 memory ratio and you'll enjoy
that 1Mb cache 3.5GHz rig.
 
Will he be able to OC to 250FSB with the P4E?? I know its fairly easy for a P4C (esp. the M0)...but I thought the Prescotts didnt OC as well?

Depends on the chip. It is always the luck of the draw when overclocking with any cpu but most will get into the 240+ range with those special few reaching 260+ range. 😛

As always, take your articles and benchmarks and comments (especially those from online sources) with a few grains of salt... In my opinion, the Prescott is getting bad press. Sure, they run hot, and that sucks, and they're finicky about their motherboards, but they're a more advanced chip, and compared to the Northwood, newer tech. At least now you can feel silly about worrying about core temps. And as soon as anyone finds a decent use for SSE3 and that meg of L2, you'll probably see the benefits before us Northwood users. Just make sure that if you're overclocking, you keep that sucker chilled. From what I've seen, the core temps just follow that hot trend they started at. Thermalright SP-94 and a Panaflo M 92mm (credit goes to the generous contributors to this forum for first suggesting that combo to me) if you can shell out for it (mine cost me a total of $70.80 {$51.95 incl. ship. from BestByte for HS, $18.85 from FrozenCPU for the pre-tailed fan}, but I only spent a half-hour shopping around). Whatever you do, ENJOY YOUR SYSTEM! That's what it's for!
 
What the heck. Same temps with stock and the volcano, not possible.

very possible. the volcano 7 sucks. i've got one and the stock intel cooler is just as good as that thing. i'm using zalman now 🙂
 
Im running the abit ic7 bios 15 with a 2.8c also. It would be wise to upgrade the power supply and the cooling. Around 235 is where i had to start raising the voltage on the ram. To get over 240, i had to increase the cpu voltage a lil. Here's some numbers to compare-

cpu: 2.8 @ 3.388
37c avg, 44c max
vcore 1.58v max

ddr: 4x256 ocz pc 3700
38.5c min, 42.9c max
2.78v min, 2.82v max
vtt 1.4v avg
2.5-3-3-7
1:1
game accel. on auto

nb: 33c min, 35c max

case: 28c min, 31c max


The agp/pci freq is fixed btw. Good luck breaking 250!
