Is it:

A. A very lousy AR for a WU?
B. A very good AR for a WU?
C. A mediocre AR for a WU?
D. The total computing time in years of the WU's at O.K.'s waiting to be sent in?

If you answered D, you would be correct. Berkely says they are working on the bandwidth problem, but if anything it seems to get worse. :|

I wish they could just buy a dsl line just for the seti@home project which would be their bandwidth that would be there 24/7 and I know it wouldn't solve the problem but it would help get all these results back in and a few more WU's out. I don't know much about networking or how easy this would be, but it seems like it could help out ever so slightly.

I think witht the combination of greater bandwidtch late a night and a dsl pumpin 24/7 orangekids Q might be able to dump in a month 😉

Does anybody have a link to that graph that shows how much bandwidth SETI is using.

You would think that some company would offer to help them out and set up a mirror. I know I remember in the past when the switch to the 3.03 client took place, I can't remember who, but somebody on out team offered to set up a mirror and got turned down.

Well I think I'm done with my ramblings now.

This is from Bezerkly's site:

The data server is up and running, but dropping connections

Right now the data server machine is up, but not all clients are able to connect. This is due to our server being swamped with requests, and usually happens right after a server outage, or if there are greater network/database problems we are currently trying to fix.

I don't think i'll make it through the day today, didn't get many WUs overnight:| Federation Queue people - I'll try to keep you as sticked as I can(kinda busy today) so i'll move as many as I can when i have time to check.

Apparently Berkeley is aware of the problem.

Its 'OK' (just) here. I can get WUs from OrangeKid, as always. Its frustraiting to have WUs in OK's hand that are waiting to get sent back in though.

They really need to sort it out.

Fingers - Its not that simple 🙂. OrangeKid uses a DSL line (As far as I know), and while that may be enough for those that use it on this team (not sure how many people actually do..) it would be in no way enough for everyone. unfortunately. It would scratch the surface 🙁

I hadn't paid attention lately to my SetiQueue, decided to check it since y'all were having so many problems.

205 results pending! :Q🙁

😛 Not really Funny but atleast it brought a smirk to my face😉😀

It seems to me that if they would change the client and server to send and receive compressed data it would go a long way towards fixing this.

One of the things I have been a part of is a system for sending / receiving gps data over a satellite network. The 'air time' is very expensive so compression saves everyone a lot of money, also the bandwidth is a fixed resource, you can't just fly up there and upgrade satellites easily, and the ones we are using have a very small pipe.
In order to scale the system up so there are a lot of users compression of data is a must.

It should not be difficult to build in a compression / decompression routine into the clients and server for seti @ home.
This would not be the ultimate answer but it should be part of it. They could very easily reduce bandwidth by 25% - 50%. They may even be able to do better if they really got inventive.

That sounds like a great idea, but would that require more powerfull machines on their side to do all that zipping and unzipping. Even if it would maybe they could use some grant money to make it possible.

I wonder if there's anybody (on the TeAm or otherwise) who goes to Berkeley, lives off-campus, and has a DSL connection they could run a Q off of and sneakernet WUs back and forth?

The web server still runs fine and stuff like SetiTeam, too. I'd give up the ability to view stats for a bit to get/send WUs!

Agreed. I've been wondering about this as well. If it's all going through the same pipe, shouldn't the web server be having trouble responding to requests as well? I have yet to get a failed http request from Berkeley throughout this.

Unless...ah yes, maybe when they said that Seti@Home was given lower priority, they specifically meant the data servers.

Yes, converting to binary will help a great deal. Like getting 25% more bandwidth for "free".

"Now with 25% more bandwidth for the same low low price!!!" 😉😉😉

I haven't had a WU leave OK's Q for several days. I'm open to suggestions.
Am I making the problem worse by keeping on dumping to OK's proxy?

Rick

I am only guessing but wouldn't additional WUs piled up in a Q take the position at the end of the line? Wouldn't all of the WUs uploaded to a Q have to be uploaded to Berkeley in the order they were received by the Q? (That's a hard sentence but if you read it slow it makes sense - Ha)

Well if they go in order FIFO then my next one to go in is on his 2nd page when ordered by date submitted.
I haven't had a unit sent to Berkley since the end of 2/16.
Ordered by date submitted his Q starts on the 17th but I don't know if he is getting anything at all sent.
I will make a note of the first and last units on the first couple pages so I can see how it's progressing over the next 12 - 24 hours.
