some more info:

Bytecc USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure - Model #HD-201U2 $4.99 After Mail-In Rebate
$20.00 Rebate: http://image.ak.outpost.com/art/rebates_pdf/3935338.pdf

this is for 2.5" hds and not 3.5" hds.
$5 is a really hot deal, but 2.5" hds generally arent cheap.
however this enclosure can run off the power supplied by the usb2.0 port so no need for additional power cables which makes it even more portable.

yes they're usually laptop HDs...but this can still be useful. For one thing if you're upgrading your laptop hard drive this would be great so that you can image right on over, or just plug it in and copy over the files without having to back it up to some other medium or own another laptop or whatnot.

For $5 it'd be a lot easier than ghosting to like 30 CD-Rs, or even 7 DVD+R's =p And in the case of the DVD+R's it might even be cheaper depending on how much you paid haha.

I'd get one if shipping were free, but sadly shipping is the deal killa

Does anyone know if this deal is going on in Fry's B&M stores? If so, it would be pretty hot, especially if you don't have to deal with the shipping costs.

I bought one of these to make a really small portable harddrive off ebay. It's really small, and very nice to transport large files

Two dead laptops sitting in my drawer, this will be perfect for them. Only getting one though cuz of the rebate limitation. But the other drive is a 6gb one anyway.

Cool.. Thanks OP for posting the deal. I have a laptop hard drive laying around that I wanted to make use of. I didn't want to spend $20 or more on an enclosure either because it's only a 4 gigger and I'm not sure how well this is going to work for me.

This enclosure is going to be $10 for me after rebate. $5 for the drive after rebate plus $5 for ground shipping.

If this works out well, I may just have to break down and grab a larger laptop hard drive. What I like about the 2.5" enclosures is that it's powered off of the USB port and you don't have to carry a wall wart around with you. It's also obviously a lot smaller and more portable than a 3.5" or 5.25" enclosure.

That's a deal. I bought an enclosure for a laptop drive last month. It was $27 or so from Newegg after shipping.

Very cool. Got one. My dad has something like this with a 60 gig hd in it, and he loves it. For $13 delivered (CA 2nd day), I think I'm going to like this.
Note that the rebate has a short submission deadline (hence 2nd day shipping for me, which was 20 cents more expensive than ground).
Thanks all,
Crusty

Anyone notice that the rebate form doesn't limit it to outpost? Newegg has these in stock for $19.99 + $5 shipping, best part is no tax.

The rebate ends 2/5/2004 and must be postmarked in 14 days.

Just be aware.

Also got mine from Newegg. Its a total of $24.99 with Fedex express saver shipping. Hopefully I get everything before the 14 days are up. And no tax to Texas.

WTF, I ordered one from newegg. The model number at newegg is identical to what outpost.com has, but neither is the exact model number of the rebate form. If it was more than $20 I wouldn't do it, but I actually need one of these things and I hate paying sales tax to outhouse.com.

for anyone looking for laptop hard drives, check out dell. they carry quite a few ranging from 20 - 60gb. with all the sales they have, you should be able to find a nice deal.

Thanks,

Hopefully these things can boot from DOS for a ghost imaging project I'm working on. :)

Picked up the Blue IBM Travel Star 2.5 case for a 6GB drive I had @ $14 . These things are great. I transfer about 2GB from work to home every week. Beats carrying a 120GB 3.5" drive in a firewire case.

Hi,
Just got the enclosure yesterday. It is model HD1-U2. There is only one cable, it has one usb cable with 2 usb connectors on one end, what's the extra connector for?

But it doesn't have the DC 5V to usb cable. Do you miss the same cable? Did we got scam? On the back of the box, it said that model HD1-U2 includes "DC 5v to usb cable" in additional to the usb 2.0 cable. So there should be 2 cables in the box, not just one.
