2.4C vs 3.0E in Intel 865 mb

I have an Intel 865PERL MB I bought about a year ago, with a P4 2.4C Ghz processor - works fine.

I'm trying to upgrade to a P4 3.0E processor - no joy.

Should this processor work okay in the MB? Do I need a bios upgrade, or something else?

Bios version RL86510A.86A.0058.P08

I'm running 2Gbyte DDR400 mem - dual channel.

System does not boot - keyboard lights flash once (2.4C flashes them a second time). No bios beeps.

Nada - just sits there.

Any clues?

THanks

Your 3.0E processor I think is a "prescott" processor. The newer prescott processors are not compatible with all older boards even if they physically fit ok. Your motherboard might not be compatible with it. Oh, on the intel site it says it's compatible, but only with bios p13 or greater. So try to upgrade the bios and see if that works. It looks like with your current bios (p8) you can use up to 3.2ghz on 800fsb but not the E editions. E and EE processors need p13+. Hope this helps!

Thanks for this info.

I've downloaded the bios update, but have to connect a floppy to the system to use it 😉

I did notice in the release notes that one of the earlier upgrades provided support for the E editions.

Thanks again!
