Once upon a time Intel's fastest desktop processor always retailed for between $1000-1100 upon release.
Compared to that it's actually reasonably cheap.

I think I'll celebrate by selling my two TBird 1.2's & replacing them with dual XP 1900+'s. Total cost without selling 1.2's: $520. Total cost - selling the 1.2's: $380 or so.

Don't get me wrong, Northwood looks like an excellent CPU. But I'd like to see a comparison between a 2.2 Northwood & dual 1900+ or 2000+ XP/MP's.

Man, hopefully, they'll price the chips to EQUAL THE PRICE of AMD. That would mean that people would probably buy whatever performed best--AMD or Intel.

AMD use to charge a premium on their processors as well (anybody remember the first Ghz Athlons?), but since they don't have the marketing power of Intel, they needed some competitive edge, so now they sell processors for a reasonable price. It's simple marketing. If Intel ever looses enough market ground and profit, they'll stop charging the premium.

The thing is, that you can buy a whole AMD system for the price of one 2.2GHz Northwood. The verdict is still out as to how much of a performance advantage it will be over an Athlon XP 1900+ or 2000+. But, I'm willing to bet, the performance it's no where near justifing the cost.

Yes, they are 478pin which is what the newer P4s are.

I'm starting to go limp over the 2.2s...not so much due to the processor which, though pricey, looks great. No, the 845D platform just doesn't seem all that fantasic. Looks like the E chipset is the one to get and who knows how long Intel will keep that on a leash? Glancing AMD's way again...

As someone else noted, once upon a time, Intel's flagship was north of $1000 on release. I remember those days vividly.

And while $765 might seem like a "bargain", I call it highway robbery. But the verdict is still out

All I can say is it would have to destroy the XP1900+ to be worth $500 more. And, somehow, I don't see that happening.

£526 is the price before VAT (similar to sales tax). The price below it (£618) is the price the consumer would actually pay and this works out to $896 :Q

Due to the over valued pound this will probably make it debut at around $700-750 in the US though.

I paid over $800 for my P2-450 when it first came out. While ~$750 is expensive, I plan on getting a 2.2GHz+ P4 with RDRAM. I'm hoping it will settle closer to $600-$650 once they become more widely available, but I won't not get one just because it would raise the total price of a system a few hundred dollars.

Sadly, the OEMs will likely attempt to throw Northwood in to i845 boards and cripple it with PC133, as well as the usual -- small, slow hard drives and ancient 3D accelerator technology -- to cut costs. With the CPU costing more than many complete systems, I don't see a way around it. Consumers aren't going to pay $2500ish anymore.

I can see it already... Dell's xxxx series... 2.2GHz Northwood with 256MB PC133 on i845, a 20GB drive, a TNT2 m64 ...
