I bought Belkin Surgemaster two weeks ago for $25 + tax - $15 MIR at CompUSA.
It features 2655 joules, 8 outlets, built-in outlet covers and up to $250,000 equipment warranty. I seriously doubt they'd ever pay up on the warranty as they'd probably finger the blame at your power company first.
In the past, I'd bought Surgemaster Gold's for about the same price after rebate. The Gold's are a little nicer: higher warranty and a convenient pivoting plug that fits flat against the wall socket. But this is a newer design with sliding outlet covers and a built-in cord clip so I went for it.
FWIW Belkin is reliable with their MIRs. I'd say this two pack is a fine bargain for non-geek needs.
Btw I read a little while ago that even Belkin surge protectors (and most others) aren't all they're cracked up to be. If the circuit breaks, the internal fuse is blown and the unit is from thereon just a power strip and not a surge protector. That sounds like a terrible design flaw (considering you'd never know exactly if the hidden, internal fuse is still good). UPSs were thus recommended as a reliable alternative. Any truth to that? Would that caveat *not* apply if you daisy chained the surge protector to a typical UPS?
