2 12" orions + 1800 watt amp + ford escort = BOOM

My god.. I just put two 12" orion subs in my P.O.S. little car, with an 1800 watt amp.. If I turn it up at all, the rear view mirror almost falls off. Holy bejesus!

Actually just $350.. I bought it off of one of my super-rich friends (I wish I was one of them), and he gave me a major discount.. normally retails for about $670. Took me a while to wire it up, but I do like it... just have to turn the bass boost off. 🙂

heheh.. sweet 😀 i'd probably leave the bass boost ON if it were me.. but then again.. i dont like hearing well

Hehe, I thought the title said "onions". I'm thinking, man this guy has one hell of a green thumb!

LOL I was thinking that too

$350... 1800 watts.. I doubt it. Thats definitely not RMS power. What model of Orion subs? NT's? HCCA's?

Ive seen some do 1800, their usually the crappy no-name ones though... Ive always wondered which to get, some cheap ass 1000 watt, or a nice ass kicker 250.... decisions decisions 🙂

UPDATE: HERE is an example of one of the crappy no-namers

Bass bass bass, blah blah blah. What happened to people caring about audio quality and not just pounding concrete?

it's most likely a class D amp.. but 1800 is still a bit much.. it's definitely not making that much power from the escort's alternator

It's a power acoustik amp (no longer made), and they're Orion HCCA's.. I'm the third owner of the system.. my friend bought it new, sold it to another of my friends about 2 weeks ago, and then he sold it to me.

any reason they were so quick to get rid of it??

Ryan (original owner) is selling his car, to buy a motorcycle, and wanted to sell the system separately. James (2nd owner) just gets bored with stuff very quickly, and doesn't care about money.. he bought some Infinity Perfects to replace the Orions.

My friend used to have an old chevette with a massive stereo system that drew more current than his alternator could put out. I think he fried a battery or two finding out for sure 🙂

Ohio Generator makes 300A alternators. Stinger Electronics makes a 2-way battery isolator, which lets an alternator charge two batteries. Stinger Electronics also makes a 1700A deep-cycle battery, and 5F capacitors. :Q

A question, though - did you just use a Y-splitter to hook up the subs, or does the amp has two outputs? Also, were the subs already enclosed, or did you have to build your own? What are the interior dimensions of it (them)? Are they in separate enclosures? Ported, sealed?

If you think the Orions make a mess of sound quality, check out MTX's 15" RFL subwoofer. 4000W power handling with >4" linear excursion. Ouch 🙂

Two outputs

Enclosed, probably 2.5' x 1.5' x 1', sealed

I have bass boost off, and bass turned to -4.. it's still insane 🙂

The Orion HCCA's are really nice subs. They are very power hungry though, you should be able to get it wayyyyy louder if you gave it a real 1800 watts, that power acoustics amp probably isn't even giving them half of that... but if it sounds fine to you, then thats all that matters.

I don't need deafening bass.. I like what I have now.
