I'm gonna put this in cliffnotes format so it's straight and to the point

So:

Trusty Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system finally died on me
Looking to find a replacement that is equivalent or better quality without breaking the bank (<$250)
Primary use will be connecting it to HTPC, but want dedicated receiver so that I can connect xbox360 and other consoles via HDMI.
Don't want surround sound, mainly for music listening, occasional movie/sports game
Klipsch 2.1s were generally loud enough, but wouldn't mind a bit louder. I was also fully satisfied with their sound quality and don't need much better (not an audiophile).
Willing to add subwoofer down the road or forego it altogether to save money.

Let me know what you all think, I've heard good things about the Polk speakers that occasionally go on sale at Fry's - my only question would be whether to get a pair of bookshelf speakers or spring for the floorstanding type (only when they are on sale of course). As far as receivers I am totally clueless but have also heard that Onkyo refurbs are a good bargain. I really require only the most basic features for the receiver. Not too concerned about whether they can play certain newer codecs uncompressed, and all that jazz - I don't anticipate buying a blu-ray anytime soon.

I think this would be the best solution. There's a ton of info on the klipsch forums about different repairs to the amp, volume knob, etc. There are also lots of cheap replacement parts on ebay.

OP, what's wrong with the speakers?

This would appear to be the exact same problem I have, taken from this thread on the klipsch forums: http://forums.klipsch.com/foru...14733.aspx?PageIndex=1

I seem to be having the same problem with my Promedia 2.1 that many people in this forum have. I just moved my set to another room in my home, hooked it up, and now I am having channel issues. When Everything is hooked up & wired in (with a working iPod as sound source, but have also tried other inputs as well):

- Control Pod Light is Green

- Left Channel is putting out sound, but not the Right, and nothing out of the sub

- Left Channel Sound is very low, and somewhat tinny.
- This sound only occurs when the "Main Volume" is all the way down

- When the Volume control is turned up, the Left Channel volume disapates, and you can start hearing some output from the sub.

- This output from the sub does not change by using the Sub control on the Control Pod

- However, if I do fiddle around with plugging in the DIN to the sub, I can SOMETIMES get the Left Channel to produce full, decent quality sound. Though if I do this, the Pod light is not lit. Yet, the problem with the volume control still presents itself (where it has to be all the way down to make any sound)

Unfortunately, the fix described within the thread is beyond my ability (don't know how to solder or anything like that), and to ship it anywhere (even a third party repair rather than klipsch) will be costly. After reading the klipsch forums for awhile it would seem that I unwittingly bought one of the most problematic set of klipsch speakers ever produced. These things never DONT break in one way or another. Oh well...they did sound good while they lasted.

There are some din-repair offers on ebay. However, you might just have to clean the volume pot. I found this thread on the Klipsch forums, and one of the posts links to this article on how to clean the volume pot. All you really need is some contact cleaner (forum members mention that deoxit works best) and a long phillips screw driver.

I have the same problem on mine and need to try this same fix. I have the 4.1 set (v.2-400), and I don't even have my surround speakers connected because they're so flaky. I've used my system so little lately that it hasn't mattered that much. For a 9-year-old set of computer speakers, they've held up pretty well other than this volume-control problem.
