Just thinking... if you've upped your budget to $1500, you could now sqeeze a sub into the mix if you wanted to.

Maybe the HK receiver, Ascend 340s, SVS PB10/HSU STF-2

Alright, I appreciate all the help you've given jello, excelsior, and everyone else as well, thank you very much :)

I'll be picking up the receiver tonight very likely and then speakers in the near future after I hear them :D

Honestly, no comparison at all. The Ref 1 are more in line with the B&W Nautilus 805S series:

Sadly, I like the Ref 1's even more than I do my bookshelf speakers:

Just talked with dad and we decided that this would be a bit of a rushed decision because I was planning on getting anything myself till closer to the end of the year and as usual, prices usually fall and hot deals keep coming around.

I'll spend time listening to speakers over the next month or two and hopefully in the near future I can pick up a nice receiver and speakers :)

Just so you are aware, these are hot deals right now on the AV123 stuff.

I'm sure I mentioned it above, but these RS550s that are $699 now are normally $999/pair.

You can see for yourself that the ref1s are normally $1500/pair. The $700/pair b-stock set is an amazing deal... and the $999 SP3/ref1 deal is even better. I don't know how much you could sell an SP3 for, but it might even get you a better price on just the ref1s in the end.

Spending time listening is a very good idea though

How often do deals like this come up? Do you think over the course of the next few months I'd come across similar deals based on past history?

Basically, I'm going to look around at that place mentioned earlier for someone who has the RS550's or ref1's so I can listen to them. I guess the thing is that only yesterday did I "officially" decide that I want to spend $1500 on this setup, not money I can just throw around by any means so I figure I might just wait and think this through.

What do you reccomend?

I think their sales kind of rotate for what's on sale. I've only been looking a couple months closely though. Their RS250s just went on a nice sale a few days ago.

They're having their annual show in Colorado right now, so they have some nice deals going.

They're introducing some new products soon (some of the new products are being auditioned at the show right now), so some of these deals right now may or may not be an attempt to get some of their stock of the older models out.

I really don't know how often they have nice deals like this on their rocket/ref line.
I know Ascend doesn't put anything on sale (except maybe as an introductory price for a new product?), so if there's nothing happening at av123 at the time, you can count on getting Ascend 340s for a good price.
You can add stands to the 340s if you want the floorstander look by the way. They are $100/pair for matching stands.
You'd want to add a sub to those though.

There will probably be a similar deal in the future on the rocket line, but the b-stock ref1 deal seems very hot to me. I don't know why the price on them is so low. I haven't seen a lot of b-stock reference products, so that might be the normal price for them.

If there isn't a deal on new stuff when you're going to purchase, you'll still be able to get these prices on b-stock stuff. I think b-stock 550s are $599 or $699 regularly but I'm not sure. They had a couple sets in b-stock when I ordered my stuff.

I think it would be a good idea to start a thread over at AV123 and see if there's anyone in your area with ref1s or rockets. It might work better than audioenvy because they were having some problems with it when I submitted my request. I don't know if they've been resolved yet.

I would like to, but I'd rather spend the money on my car. :) I haven't even turned on the home theater in practically half a year. Kinda sad.

Besides, I really like the Ref 1, but do not like the Ref 2 as much. They're tilted down a bit too much for my tastes. 2 Pairs of Ref 1 (sides & rear), 1 pair of Ref 3 (fronts), and 1 Ref center would be too much to spend on a HT that I only use a few times a year.

Too bad you don't use it :(

I thought you were just talking about a single pair and would be the buyer of the $700 b-stock set and could sell your current single pair of bookshelf speakers to cover the cost.

Hey guys. I wanted to add some more info of the experiences of the guy who came over to my house and auditioned my rocket set.

He ended up going with Package 0 from AV123 which is 750s up front, 550s for rears, and a 200 center.

I told him a little about your situation and wanted to get in writing his experiences auditioning other speakers.

Here's what he had to say:

"Concerning speakers, these are what I have auditioned and what my impressions are:

Energy Veritas 2.3i - They were nice but the midrange was a little thin. And at 2k for just the fronts, I would have picked the RS850s over them any day.

Monitor Audio s6 - These were fairly neutral speakers, but nothing really impressed me. They could be compared fairly well to the Paradigm studio 60's which also were fairly neutral but not quite as detailed. The RS550s blow them both away!

B&W 703 and 704 - The 703s were very nice but run 3K. The 704's cost 2200 and were overly bright. The detail was nice but would have cost a major headache if listened to for too long. Also there bass was thin. For $2200, there is much better.

Vandersteen 1c - Very nice for the price. The bass was lacking some, but that is where the step up comes into place, being the 2CE Sigs.

Vandersteen 2CE Signature. For $1675, there isn't a better speaker in my opinion. They are Slightly laid back when the tweeter level on the back is set to 0, but sound perfect when it is set to 2. These are the speakers I would have purchased if I had not purchased the rockets. However looks play an important role for me and the Vandees are just plain ugly (my wife agrees). Also there is a simple cloth covering them which would not provide adequate protection against curious young children.

In comparison to the 2CE Sigs, the rockets are a little more laid back, only lacking that crisp top end. This can be fixed with a slight adjustment to the treble decibel (if the receiver allows for it) however. Overall I would say that the Vandersteen 2CE sigs are a nicer speaker than the RS750s, but for a few hundred more dollars I got the RS750s, 550MKIIs, and the bigfoot center. It was a no brainer for me!

As far as the ref series goes, they are brighter than the rockets. Some would say more detailed, but the rockets are very detailed, they just won't give you listening fatigue. I have never heard Athenas so I can't say, but I do know they are highly recommend on many forums. I would go with the Refs myself, but I am a little bias ;)"

If you can, purchase from a dealer or internet direct. But not from Best Buy, or Crutchfield etc.

Dealers or Internet Direct give discounts off MSRP - sometimes a significant discount.

Here is what I came up with during my auditions for best in price range.

Speakers (my opinion of "best in class, worthy of cost of upgrade from cheaper choice")
$225: Paradigm Titans
$600: B&W DM 602 S3
$1500: B&W 705
$2000: B&W N805 (discontinued)
$4400: Thiel CS 2.4

Electronics (price/performance leaders for stereo only)
$350: Cambridge Audio Azur 540A (great for Titans and 602 S3)
[performed similarly to NAD's $380 solution]

$1200: Rotel RB-1070 & RC-1070 Separates (great for B&W 705 and N805)

$2500: Krell KAV-400xi (excellent for B&W 705, N805, Thiel CS 2.4)

Price no object "just for kicks" audition:
$38000: Dali Megaline
$76000: 4x Krell FPB 750Mcx (bi-amp setup) + Conrad-Johnson Tube Preamp
$30000: Krell Master Reference Subwoofer (crossed at 30hz)

I ended up with the B&W DM 602 S3 and the Azur 540A for just above $900 including stands.

Yesterday, I took advantage of Tax Free weekend and upgraded to the B&W N805 and the Rotel Separates listed above. I couldn't be any happier (except if I could afford the Krell integrated amp) with this setup.

Good luck! For stereo, $1500 is a great place to start. You have quite a few options in front of you.

If you can do without a subwoofer, I would recommend the B&W DM 603 S3 as they are nice floorstanders for the money ($1000). I didn't list them above because I was mainly concerned about bookself type speakers - until the $4k mark.

If you want a subwoofer and have $1500 for speakers, I can wholeheartedly recommend the B&W 602 S3 and a subwoofer like the SVS PC+ 16-47, 2x outlaw Rocket UFW-10, HSU VTF3, or ACI Titan B-stock.

Yeah, they're demo-ing some new stuff at the show right now I think.

I haven't really been paying attention to the reference line though, so I don't know if there's a new ref1 or a replacement in the works right now.

The ref1 new ones (not b-stock) are still their regular $1500 now.

EDIT: for the ref1s specifically, I'd imagine they lowered the price because nobody has bought them for a couple weeks.
