2.1 Computer Speaker Set-up

So I just built my first rig and it's ALIVE! But I want to give it a voice and what better way to do that than with a set of speakers. I am either thinking of going the bookshelf route or the 2.1 route. Would like to spend less than $75 on speakers. Looking to mostly use them for music and some gaming.

I have a small room so I don't think they need to shake the house down in any regards. I mostly listen to eletronic, rock, reggae, and hip hop.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Looking for the best bang for your buck. Doesn't have to be the highest quality speakers, but I definitely don't want to hear a hissing or clipping. Just want them to handle every day use

Thanks

I found a Klipsch promedia 4.1 set for $50. It's around 4 years old. It's a craigslist find near my area. The guy says they are still in great working condition (honestly wouldn't buy before listening either way)

I hear that the Klipsch promedia serier have had problems with their amps. Would this be a stupid purchase seeing as it's so old?

Read a lot of good info on the Swan speakers. Maybe I could find a slightly used set? I would think I would want bass with the music I am planning on listening to

the klipsch promedia aren't as clean sounding as the swan speakers, but the bass is a lot more prevalent (speaking from experience comparing the swan m10 to klipsch 2.1 promedia)

i do remember hearing a lot about older klipsch promedia's having problems, but $50 seems like a great price on it. I'm not sure about if the risks outweigh the pricing or not, they'll definitely be the best 4.1 you can get for the price though

Yeah it does seem that the risks might actually outweight the pricing. 4 years with a bad reputation doesn't leave much life in them. It's probably a bit too risky. If I can talk him down to $30, its a done deal though.

Thanks for your feedback thus far fralexandr

4 years is a NEW set of ProMedias. Those things originally came out in the late 90's I believe. I think it's a good price assuming there is nothing obviously broken, even if you end up using them as 2.1s.

mfenn-nice seeing you again.

The promedia' are "technically" newer than that 90's, but I've read a lot of comments about the amps blowing and the connectors breaking easily...shrugs, maybe I should just bite the bullet since they work now?

A friend of mine has a pair of Bose he bought from Sam's Club, pretty impressive IMHO, not sure about the model but looking at Amazon seems like it must be Bose Companion 2

Well, what I meant was that the design has been around for a long time. I looked it up, and the original Promedia 5.1 system was introduced in 2001. You can still find those original units hanging around, so I guess my point is that the longevity is pretty good, especially since yours were only made in 2008.
