Which would you prefer.
Two
Geforce 6800GS

vs
One
Gforce 7800GTX

The GTX is about $40 more than two 6800GSs, but is it worth two of the 6800's? One big benifit I can see at this time to getting one GTX is the fact that I will still be able to put a second one in later down the road. Any thoughts would be greatly appreaciated! Thanks!

Neither of those. For $400 and $439, respectively, there are much better choices.

But, if you MUST choose between those two options, and those two options only, the GTX (although in many cases, the SLI GSs will provide better performance). It kinda depends on what games you play, settings you prefer, and what resolution you play at.

First off, what kind of apps are you going to be using? If you are just pretty much playing games, what resolutions are you planning on playing?? And, I'm sure everyone is going to say this, if you aren't going to go SLI now, then plan on STILL buying to video cards later for an SLI setup! Buying a 7800gtx and waiting for the money for the 2nd 7800gtx is going to frustrate you (unless you are planning on getting one in a month). Because there is going to be a better single card out there compatible with the newest DirectX drivers and who knows what other features they are going to have.

Right now, I mostly play HL2, and I want to bump my res up and have full textures and all that jazz. My old GeForce 4 Ti 4600 is crawling at low settings. I'm putting together a new system, and thought I had made up my mind, but started reading some different threads here, and now am not sure exactly what I want to use.

7800gtx is old. If you want that kind of speed the 7900gt does it OR ythe X1800XT 256 $299 at newegg. Or get the 512 if you can find it cheap.

Goodness, get a 7900gt or even an x1800xt, there a bit faster than the 7800gtx and considerably cheaper at the moment too. Yeah, I have 2 7800gtx, but I got them at such a discount...now theyre just overpriced. HL2 will run like butter on either of those cards at the highest settings with vsync on too

Just get the X1900XT like I said. It's better than any other card recommended here. Surely if you're thinking about a $440 card you could spend $10 more and get a much faster card.

Hey now, be careful at what you say about the Ti4600!!! That was one the best cards ever made IMHO. My poor one died last year :( It ran HL2 at 30fps 1280x1024 in a P4 2.53 Of course it didn't have any AA or AF or about anything else...

Anyways, if you are wanting to play just HL2 or something similar----I'd get a decent 7800gt or something close to it for about $100-150 less then the setups you are looking at. Unless you have the moolah to spend a good card is the eVGA 7800gt CO...it's OC'ed to 470mhz/1100mhz with a copper HSF on it. But if you want awesome performance for a single card and have the $$ wait and get the 7900gt.

LOL, : ) wasnt trying to bash the Ti4600. It's soo good that I've had it well, pretty much since it came out and am just now having a hard time playing a few games.

All in all, I'm putting together my first new system in 3 years, and I read a lot of good reviews on New Egg about the first cards I mentioned. My total budget is $1400 for this rig, and the 7800GTX was going over that budget by a mere $30. I've noticed that there is always a card that's just $10 more, but then there's a card for just $15 more than that and so on to the point that I'm $500 over budget : ) I'm sure you all can relate. So that being said. Best suggestion of a card for absolutely no more than $450.

Thank you all again for your help!
