1UP Sold and EGM Closing Rumors
The Internet is abuzz with (possible) Ziff Davis shakeups.
by Greg Miller
January 6, 2009 - The end of an era might be dawning for a stalwart of the videogame industry -- Electronic Gaming Monthly might be closing for good.

Today, paidContent.org, website devoted to the business of digital content, ran a story titled "Ziff Davis sells 1UP digital network to Hearst, shutters EGM." In the article, which has since been removed, paidContent states that publisher Ziff Davis Media is closing EGM with this month's issue being the 20-year-old publication's last and selling the 1UP Digital Network to the Hearst Corporation. Under Hearst, 1UP would fall under the UGO Entertainment umbrella. Ziff Davis Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2008.

A spokesperson at 1UP refused to comment this afternoon and directed questions to Jason Young, Ziff Davis CEO. A message left for Young, an e-mail to paidContent Managing Editor Ernie Sanders, and a message for paidContent Publisher and Editor Rafat Ali were not immediately returned this afternoon. Meanwhile, a UGO spokesperson did not return a phone call.

Today, former 1UP Editorial Director and EGM Editor-in-Chief John Davison wrote an article about the paidContent brouhaha on What They Play, a gaming site he co-founded. Davidson also couldn't get a straight answer as to what is going on in EGM/1UP land, but in an update he stated "Sources have indicated that details will be forthcoming as to the validity of the story by tomorrow morning."

Thoughts?

Used to love EGM a few years ago, but I felt like they lost a lot in the past 2 or 3 years. I actually dislike their reviews now because they are so short, and even though they tout the 3 different reviews by 3 different people, 2 of the 3 reviews are 100 words at best sometimes.

Nonetheless, it isn't surprising to see yet another gaming mag go up in flames. They are basically relegated to bathroom reading material anymore for most.

I'll miss the 1up Yours podcast, but nothing beyond that. Hope the people who lost their jobs land on their feet soon.

Yeah, I'll miss the 1up Yours podcast, but I didn't really read the site beyond that. I get all of my gaming news from Joystiq and here.

Yeah, I loved 1UP Yours and 1UP FM was pretty decent as well. Tons of 1UP employees were let go.

Man, that sucks! 1up.com had easily the best features, and 1up yours was easily the best gaming podcast. I rely on podcasts to get me through the day, and thats going to leave a gaping hole in my week.

They axed pretty much all their talent. Hopefully those guys end up somewhere else where they can continue on.

Crap, I didn't see the part where it says the 1Up Yours podcast is no more, that sucks! It was definitely one of the best gaming podcasts out there, because they always talk about games, and that's it. I hate listening to a gaming podcast when the people start talking about other crap. The 3 Red Lights podcast at IGN is HORRIBLE for this, and I quit listening to them 4 or 5 months ago.

Yep, same here. It was one of the few gaming podcasts where they actually talked about games, and actually knew what they were talking about. Aside from the nintendo podcast, IGN is terrible, they sound like a bunch of teenagers, and cant stay even remotely on topic to save their lives. Even 1up used to refer to that whole bunch as "the kids table".

From kotaku:

According to twitter posts, GAF posts and phonecalls to MTV, around 30 staffers were let go today, including Skip Pfister, Ryan O'Donnell, Philip Kollar, Jay Fresh, Cesar Quintero, Nick Suttner, Anthony Gallegos, Matt Chandronait, Shane Bettenhausen and former EIC James Mielke.

Also cut were most of the Gamevideos.com team, as well as production of the 1UP Show.

Thats pretty much everyone that mattered.

I just started listening to 1up Yours 2 months ago, and now it's gone. It was my favorite podcast, I would have even listened to commercials to support the podcast.

Holy crap, 3 Red Lights is my favorite. They're pretty funny - I really like Hilary. It's basically 3 or 4 guys hanging out and just talking for an hour, rather than a straight-up gaming news podcast.

I used to listen to 1up Yours, but it got terrible over time, basically because all of the quality people on it started to jump ship. Every few weeks someone wound up leaving and there was a new, less interesting person.

It reached its prime when the dude who now works for Bungie was there. I forget his name. He loved WoW and had a big beard. His personality was actually a lot like Hilary's from IGN.

Seriously, what kind of idiots are running UGO? "Let's buy 1UP... OK, good. Now that we've bought them, let's just totally eviscerate everything that made 1UP worth anything."

To each his own, I guess. Hilary is definitely an interesting personality, but as I listened to the TRL podcast over the course of about 6 months, it would annoy me more and more that they would go almost entire shows without talking about actual games. The IGN PS3 Podcast Beyond podcast got to be just as bad with me, and I finally got tired of that idiot Greg Miller screaming into the mic all the time, so I quit lisening to that one, too.

I tried listening to the Giant Bombcast podcast a couple of times. The first one I listened to, I suffered through 10 minutes of listening to them drink energy drinks and not saying one word about games, so I switched to the next one, and it was the same thing, so I deleted the entire podcast subscription and haven't looked back. I'm sure they eventually got to games, but I don't care about their opinions of energy drinks or listening to what they did over the weekend.

The only podcasts I listen to now are 1Up Yours, the Gamespot podcast (which is surprisingly good), and Major Nelson's podcast. Guess I'm down to 2 unless I can find another podcast out there that has actual discussions about games for 95% of the podcast.

Damn shame, 1up.com suffered from not being able to pick a site format that was as easily maneuverable as most, but their podcasts, reviews, and people in general were top notch. When they shut down the Games for Windows publication, I kind of figured it was a beginning of the end sort of situation, it was still a shocker when the news rolled in last night.

My thoughts go out to everyone who lost their jobs in this, even Shane B.

Those guys are smart tho, they'll sell off a few shrink wrapped copies of Chrono Trigger for the SNES and use that money to start their own site like Jeff Gerstmann did. There's a lot of talent walking out the door there, UGO/Hearst are morons for letting that go.

A bloody shame that print publications are falling left and right. Clicking a hyperlink for my information is but a shred of the overall experience that flipping through a magazine provides.

I've had an EGM subscription since 1992, with only a couple of periodic lapses.

I think it's disgusting how those tools charged in and completely obliterated everything that's been established. I really feel for the personalities on the 1UP team. I hope they can all successfully find a fresh start elsewhere.

Wow--I'm actually stunned! I knew something like this was coming (see Ziff-Davis filing for chapter 11 last year) but I didnt see the house of cards come tumbling down all at once. This is a pretty big deal. I dont really visit many gaming websites anymore, but rather listen to Podasts at work. It's so much more appealing for me.

Although I wasnt the biggest 1UP Yours fan (once Luke Smith left, it went down hill for me) but I still enjoyed listening to it from time to time. For me the best 1UP network Podcasts were 1UP FM and Retronauts. I feel those guys could articulate their views and opinions well--especially Nick Suttner's.

This also leads me to wonder exactly how much the poduction dept's operation cost amounted to over there since they were doing the 1UP Show (video) and several audio podcasts. I'm guessing it was quit a bit. Doing these things takes a decent amount of time and money (one might be surprised how much the annual cost is in regards to time consumption and $--no one I know of does Podcasting for a living), and I can only hope it helps greaten people appreciation for Podcasters in general (in any genre). It's always kinda bummed me out a bit to see some people carp about trivial things when they're getting something entertaining for free. If it's not enjoyable--cool move on. And I dont mean to imply that there can be no constructive critisism either (our Podcast has grown considerable in quality due to listener input)--but it's the immature rallying that can go on that bothers me. It's kinda like someone bringing a batch of cupcakes they spent their free time making to work for everyone to enjoy and one of those co-workers who doesnt enjoy them seeking that person out and berating them. This might be a bit of an exageration, but I'm just trying to make a point. I've guess what I'm saying is--I've always supported anyone who does a Podcast because I think it's ultimately a good thing and it's just a fun hobby. I love it! I love that we live in an age where this is possible dont you? I hope some good can come out of all of this.

More importantly I hope those people find jobs and land on their feet safely. I hate to see anyone get canned as it's stressful and sad for everyone and never a good thing (at first). For me personally when I was layed off a few years ago, it actually turned out to be a really great thing for me in the end.

This really freaking sucks man. I listen every week to 1up show, 1up yours, and 1up FM. They helped me get through work. At least I still have giantbomb, joystiq, and cagcast but 1up podcasts were the best.

I hope Garnett and Shane at least still talk to the community somehow. Shane is awesome even if he is a fanboy.

I knew this was coming after Games for Windows was canned.

FWIW, I've not cared about EGM for years. I liked it way better when I was a kid during the early SNES and Genesis days. After they got tied up with the whole 1up.com thing and shortened their name to just EGM I lost interest.

RebelFM is good and 1up yours is coming back in some way although its speculated it maybe pay to listen.

I would pay 10$ for a year or 20$ forever or something. Its not as good without Jeff Green or Shawn Elliot though.

I think Jeff was the reason I kept with Computer Gaming Monthly once it changed to Games for Windows. I always enjoyed his editorial and comments. I hated to see that magazine canned. To finish my subscription they sent me copies of EGM and it just wasn't the same. The whole format of the magazine was annoyingly bland. First thing I noticed was the fact that there were more pc ads from dell or cyberpower in the magazine than there were console game ads.

Were Jeff and Shawn canned in the transition?

Used to have subscription to EGM back in the early 90's, those were the good times. Not a fan of 1UP.com, guess I won't miss anything if I never had it.

Umm...Jeff and Shawn had already left some time ago.
