Also, he wanted to build something silent. There are at least 6 40mm fans in there. I don't know about you guys, but I have never really met a silent 40mm fan.

According to comments listed at the bottom of the first link there are actually 8 40mm fans, but they are Scythe 3000 rpm units not the Supermicro stock units.

Here are the newegg reviews for the 1u cooler he is using.

Yeah, real quiet:

Newegg reviewer said:
If you don't have fan speed control on your MB these will make a lot of noise. As others have said, they are truly jet engine-like.

I never said it was quiet.

EDIT: To be quite honest with you, I think my stock Intel HSF is almost too loud. I can only imagine something half the height with a blower fan would be much worse.

1u is meant for machinerooms that nobody needs to go in. Any server chassis gets loud as all hell

When I looked up the specs of the stock Double thickness Supermicro 40mm fans they listed ~25cfm and 60db for each fan.

I wonder if scenarios can get so bad that OSHA noise regulations would become an issue?

heck yeah that would make you go deaf. spending days in a noc definitely hurts your hearing

When I looked under wikipedia for the definition of noc I found "network operation center". Apparently this is the area adjacent to the servers? Then I thought to myself, "How much noise could really transfer through the walls and/or windows?"

I was a little skeptical till I found this.

Here is another video discussing sound vs OSHA regulations.

wow someone failed fluid dynamics class.

what an airflow nightmare

Yep, no doubt there is a huge airflow price being paid for increasing cpu density by using the 1u form factor.

While I was looking up information on this topic I saw some interesting power figures being quoted for cooling. In some cases having a 1U case with the maximum number of fans can chew up quite a bit of energy. This little 40mm fan by itself uses 13 watts.

But then I thought to myself, "how bad would the airflow situation be if the limitations of stacking 1u cases were removed for a gamer case?" Couldn't individual air intakes/ducts ( drawing in ambient air) for both CPU/Video card be added to the flat sides of the enclosure?

That being said, it appears relative lack of PWN/variable speed 1u HSFs is a major problem if the goal is to decrease noise. Nidec Servo makes some 100mm blowers that supermicro uses to cool 1u height passive heatsinks (in an arrangement similar to a video card's), but these are only available in very high fixed speeds.

Here is a 1u hsf comparison test done by VR Zone.

If anyone has links to other tests please post them.

go take a look at a IBM or HP 1U server (hp 360 g7) - or hell even supermicro

it is like a car radiator and fan - you can put the worlds biggest fan on there but the shroud is what does the magic

Your are right. Something like this 1u dual cpu or 1u Tesla case looks like it has much better fan placement strategy.
