I think it has been shown that these run all the time at 5400RPM, so performance is the lowest of all the 1TB drives. HOWEVER, power draw is also the lowest of any 1TB drive. I think you can make for a very inexpensive and power-thrifty WHS server with this and a board like the Intel D201GLY2. Probably $400 total (not counting WHS itself) for a mini ITX box with 1TB space and drawing probably 25W idling.

The BB ad for next week shows they have the Seagete 1TB drive on sale for $189.99. Looks like a good time to get a 1TB drive.

Sweet, thanks for the info.

I have three of these running in RAID 5 in my home file server. So far they work great. Just make sure you get WDTLER and turn TLER on before RAIDing them.

If this is true (checking BB ad now), I'm returning my Maxtor 1TB I bought on Tuesday. I get a lower price ($199 vs $189), the 5 year warranty, AND points towards Reward Zone.

Do you know which one will be on sale? What is the SKU#? The only one I see on their website is this one and it's not available in store.
Thanks.

Thanks.

The ad shows the one that says it is web only on the BB site. It says New so maybe they are going to start stocking them in the store starting with this sale. The model #in the ad is st310005n1a1as-rk.

I wonder if Staples or Circuit City has this drive? I know Fry's has it but pricematching at Fry's is more difficult.
Microcenter, here I come.

I've got one of the new 1TB Greepower drives in my Windows Homeserver and it runs at least 5 degree C cooler than a comparable 500 GB SATA drive above and below it. For a fileserver, I think the efficiency, quietness and coolness is worth it.

I picked up one of these Thursday and installed it in my MPC. I'm floored how quiet it is. I can't even hear it seek. The performance is good enough. It doesn't bottleneck a MKV file transfer via gigabit, nor does it have any trouble playing back ripped bluray VC-1 streams.

5400 or 7200, doesn't matter for this drives target market: archiving data.
