Hi. I'm new to all this so i hope i give the right info over. I have a*1tb samsung *s2*external hdd. When i plug the drive in via usb on the computer the light comes on and you can hear the disk reading like any other hdd. Shortly after that windows will pop up saying*usb device *not recognised and the drive powers off. It does not show up in disk management and have some photos on there of my son that i really dont want to lose. everything else can be lost. Is there any way i can get windows to recognise the drive so i can get them pictures off of it?

I have tried taking it apart to plug it in directly to the computer but it has absolutely no connections other than for the usb cable.

it may not be getting enough power from the USB port to spin up fully. Try plugging it into a self-powered (not bus-powered) USB hub, that is connected to the PC. I find that helps immensely.

Get a quality hub, not a cheap chinese one, and make certain that the power adaptor has 0.5a (500ma) as a minimum for each port on the hub, plus about 200ma for the hub itself. Bonus if the hub supports ipod charging, which means that it can supply more current to each port than the minimum the standard specifies (which, btw, may not be enough for a HD.)

I have two 1tb samsung s2 hdd's. one works fine and the other doesn't. surely if it wasnt getting enough power it would be the same with both drives?

Try the one that does not work on the port of the one that does.
