1TB Samsung F3 HD103SJ 54.99 Shipped

Fixed for you.

I've had very good experience with Newegg shipping HDDs. Always in the plastic case with at least two layers of bubble wrap and peanuts, if not hard foam padding as well. Amazon, on the other hand, throws the plastic case into a box and ships it out. Either way, with the impending sale of the Samsung HDD unit, the price on these drives (which are excellent imo) continues to fall!

In for one from Amazon. I had an Amazon gift card balance from depositing several small rebate credit cards (who knew they eventually expire). Hope they have improved on their packaging methods, several recent reviews indicate they have.

The plastic case comes with each drive, so nothing magical there. Newegg has improved how they ship the drives though, because lately I get them wrapped in bubble wrap and put into a small cardboard box, then in the larger box with peanuts or paper as additional padding. My last drive ordered from Amazon was this:

Yup, I was so amazed that I took a pic. They wrapped it in cardboard with zero padding like it was a book.

That is wacky. Did your hd work ok?

Why is everyone so concerned about hard drive shipping procedures. These things can take an ungodly amount of shock when they are off without any damage at all.

"Non-operating Shock 300G, 2 ms"

300Gs of shock! bouncing around in a ups truck wont produce anywhere near that kind of shock.

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 54.99 shipped.

This is the cheapest I've seen them yet...in fact I bought 2 last week for 64.99 each.

Amazon has them for 59.99, but New York pays tax with Amazon (BOO!), and Amazon is notoriously bad at shipping HDDs.

Good deal. I think the F3 has been as low at $51.50 (at Superbiiz), but it hasn't been that low for a long time. Even at $55, it's an awesome deal. I fear that the Samsungs won't be around much longer now that Seagate bought them - they'll probably just phase them out, since they were superior to the Seagates.

It's not all about G's, it's the impact it receives during shipping. Have you ever bought a retail hard drive? Do you think the box is that big just for shits and giggles? It's that big because of the protection it has during shipping.

I bought this same drive from Newegg last year and it just died. Getting Samsung to accept the RMA back was a MAJOR pain in the butt. This HD103SJ part number is an OEM number and Samsung kept telling me to send the drive back to the system manufacturer. Had to call and send several emails before they finally would give me an RMA number. Sent the drive off a week ago and their website says the drive hasn't arrived yet. Now waiting on their response. Not worth it just to save a few $.

haha, I bought one from Amazon for the $54.99 price and free shipping. Newegg jacks me for sales tax in NJ. I guess I'll chance the lousy shipping container from Amazon.

I just put together a system for my mom with parts from Amazon. The parts came in one large box. Inside that box was a smaller box with the hdd cradled in a plastic tray as though it was hovering in the center of the box. I was impressed.

Guess everyone only hears the bad stories?

I also received my HDD from Amazon like this. Seems it's a crap shoot how they pack it.

Yes.

Try packing a drive like that and sending it back when you have to RMA. The drive manufacturers will say your warranty is void.

Definitely Correct. They expect the packaging of the returned hd to go through the wash and dry cycle without a scratch.

You are right , I got it for $51.50 around Black Friday from Superbiiz .It runs great and very quiet. Its 40% faster than my older wd5001aals according to everest disk benchmark.

Their web/e-mail support is nonexistent for hard drives. I got crap from samsung's websites, but they put me in touch with "Total Tech Solutions" which is their HDD factory service center. Called those guys, had RMA # immediately, and had a brand new drive within 2 weeks. Number was 201-935-0671, if anyone is having problems.

Working in IT on the side for 14 years, I've always noticed retail drives have a lower failure rate and often age with less spindle noise. Call it drive manufacture conspiracy, binning quality of OEM drives, or shipping/packing proceedures, but I've always stuck with retail drives for my personal system and have never had a single one fail.

Except external drives, but thats because Seagate (and other manufactures) are obsessed with 7200RPM drives in enclosures that don't breath and cook the drives like a furnace over years...

and thats how I lost all my pr0n. lol.
