My current notebook HD is 1TB and I'm down to about 40GB space left and I'll shortly either have to delete data or replace with a larger capacity HD pretty soon. I'd prefer to replace with a larger HD, but it seems the drive makers have plateaued at 1TB for 9.5mm drives and there's been no increase for a couple years. Any idea what the holdup is?

I should mention this HD is not my main OS/program drive as I use a 256GB SSD for that. This drive is for storage of my pictures and has all the pictures taken with digital cameras since my first one in 1998 as well as slides scanned in going back to the 60's. I know I could offload some of that but it's nice having all of it in one place.

I do have multiple backups to external HD's and since they can be thicker than 9.5mm I have several of 2TB size. The thing is, my current cameras (2X Nikon D800E's) eat up about 50MB/picture so they eat up storage like its going out of style.

So, any word on 1.5TB or 2TB 2.5 inch drives at 9.5mm?

not but even if they go 1.5 to 2tb, how long till you fill that up.. better off moving to usb drive and not wait for them to come out with larger drives.

I see listing for a couple drives over 1TB now but I don't see any availability for them just yet. Seems Samsung has the first at 2TB which is about the size I'd like to get.

It's taken about a decade to fill up 1TB of images but my D800E eats up 50MB/pic so I doubt I'll last another decade getting to 2TB. Still, I think 2TB should get me to at least another 3-4 years.

You may want to look into the possibility of switching out the DVD drive to another HDD/Caddy assembly. that way you can get another HDD into the laptop.

I've already done that ... the laptop came with a 1TB HD and a DVD drive (slot drive) and I replaced the HD with a 256GB SSD then replaced the DVD with the original 1TB HD. What I'm looking to do is replace the 1TB drive with a 2TB drive keeping the 256GB SSD. By the time I'm pushing out of the 2TB drive I expect to have a new laptop with, hopefully, a 4TB drive.

Looks like 1.5 is the max currently. WD does have a 1.5 and 2TB drives but they are 15mm drives an may not fit
 
the best you could do for now is a crucial 960gb ssd and the 1.5tb hdd. you could move the crucial ssd to your next laptop. so you are not really going to lose the ssd .
