1st pick David Carr: Superstar or Bust?

What do you guys think about David Carr... do you guys think that he is going be the next great QB or the next Heath Huler and Akilli Smith?

i think he is going to have a tough time with the players around him at first. but the guy is uber talented and can throw it anywhere. he'll be alright once he gets a decent recieving core...

i hear they're taking major applewhite too.

i think its funny that the draft hasn't even happened and david carr has already bought a house in houston.

If he was able to face over-rated POS Defences like th Colorado Buffaloes each week he'd be a major success. Of course so would any decent quaterback.

<< Probably be solid, but not spectacular. If I had the first pick, it'd be Peppers. >>

Wouldn't make sense for Houston to take Peppers though. He wouldn't fit their defensive scheme. Running a 3/4 most of your pass rush comes from your quick OLBs, not your DE's.

$11 million signing bonus? WOW, I'd never give that much money to an unproven rookie. Do the words "Ryan Leaf" mean anything to anybody?

Houston team officials have already said that they're gonna work on Carr's arm angle, since he throws at a kind of 3/4 sidearm. That would worry me if I was a Texans fan. Reminds me of how some MLB teams try to take good hitting rookies and try to mess with their swings so that they can hit the long ball...usually ends up screwing up their career.... If he does have one thing going for him, it's that he's pretty mature and older than most other draftees. The next Brett Favre? Who knows, QB draft picks are way too unpredictable.

Ya but they left Danny Warffel's arm the way it was and he sucked in the NFL after being one of the best college QB's ever. Most will say he never what it takes to be a good NFL QB, but all I know is, he had a hell of a career in college.

I think he'll do well, he does have one heck of a gun. At the #1 pick, he is the clear choice. As mentioned, Peppers is solid, but doens't fit into their scheme.

Now whoever ends up with Major Applewhite is gonna be great. Got to love the guy. He isn't flashy nor have a great arm, but he wins. Plain and simple.

Man his agent is going to be getting a lot of business.

<< Joey Harrington 4 Ever 🙂 >>

Yup. I think Harrington would be a petter pick too...but that's just me 🙂

i don't know. i just think that Carr is a lot "smarter" of a QB than joey. i like joey a lot but i just don't think he has the 'football intelligence' that Carr has. and it has been debated all last year who the best arm in college football was...almost everyone said Carr.

A lot has been made here in Houston about Carr's maturity and character. Not judging Harrington's character, though I do remember the story about the NY billboards last summer that depicted Harrington as the clear choice for the Heisman....before a single game was played.

Poise. another one of Carr's great characteristics. 😉

Besides the Class of '83, isn't the recent track record for QB first-round picks spotty at best? Aikman was successful, but look at the teams he played on. Bledsoe made it to a Super Bowl, but look at him now (not to say he's a bust). But many of the successful QBs came out of nowhere.

Daunte Culpepper? he was first round.

Okay, Steve McNair is another one who turned out pretty well. My point is that many of the successful QBs weren't first-round picks. And many of the QBs that were picked high turned out to be flops.

😀 touche. yeah i hear what you are saying. i look at this way: a lot of college QB's are great in college. they come from teams like FSU, UF, UCLA, etc. they all have GREAT recievers to catch the ball. since they are so good in college they get taken in the first round. they go to a team with sub-par WR's and have trouble. they never develop into a good defense reading QB cause everyone sees them failing at completing passes, and never get the chance again cause they see he has already failed. and lets be realistic, one of the most important characteristic of a good QB is reading defenses. That's why Drew Brees isn't starting. everyone knows he will be a good QB but he has to develop and the Chargers are already developing WR's. Can you imagine learning how to create offense better than from Doug Flutie!?

Considering he went to high school about a mile from where I live, I'm going to say he's going to be the next big thing! 🙂
