To the OP: Do you know what branch of Karate you're about to practice?

I'm assuming it's Shotokan or possibly "Okinawan" but just curious . . ..

The first one on that list 😛.

Ooh, a variation of Kyokyushinkai! :Q 😀

Sounds like you're going to be doing a lot more than "punching air" as another poster stated! Good luck, and have fun! (and prepare to gt beaten!😀) 😉

Kyokyushin FTW!

That is what I took. Full contact, fighting every class Karate! My shins and toes were in such bad shape I couldn't walk without a limp for about three months. Be sure to stock up on some OTC pain killers, BenGay, Heating Pads, Sports Tape, and some of that stick band stuff they put around your arm when you give blood because it is great for bloody knuckles.

Have fun!

Hahaha funny you should mention that, I already got a huge blister on the ball of my left foot from pivoting so much. With 2 minutes left it popped and I started bleeding on the gym floor and had to go get it taped up 😀.

No offense, but why wouldn't you take a better art? Karate is really not that effective unless you are phenomenal and there are many combative arts that disable everything karate has to offer. Just wanted to let you know since I believe you could be finding a better way to defend yourself, if that's part of the reason you're attending.

I'm taking it because 1) I've always wanted to get into a martial art 2) I had fun when I did karate a long time ago 3) this class is cheap and fits into my 9-5:30 work schedule.

Considering the videos I found, I'd say these are pretty good self defense techniques.

I miss karate. I was six months away from my black belt when I quit... 🙁

Full contact sparring ftw!

everyone starts at white and ends at black. of course, you should be wearing cup for sparring courses.

i got my first degree black belt in chung do kwan at 11 then i left for tae kwon do and my grandmaster let me to make a transition without starting over at white belt. i got my 2nd degree black belt at 14. quit at 15 years old to concentrate on basketball. it would be nice if i continue that way. 🙂

black belt = expensive than all color belts due to name on the belt, certificate and membership to some karate organization i forget the name (it starts with k.)

edit: i loved my old days, beating sh!t out of everyone all the way to first place in tournaments (of course, in age category.)

not necessarily. when i was in elementary school, i took tae kwon doe classes. our belts went like this: white, orange stripe, orange, purple stripe, purple, green stripe, green, brown stripe, brown, red stripe, red, black stripe, black,

then we had different lvls of black or something like that. although i imagine it was different from most karate classes.
