1st Attempt at Overclocking my 850 TBird

I have just tried overclocking my 850 Thunderbird using a pencil, when I set the multiplier to 9X the chip is reported as a 700 and when I tried 9.5X I get a 750.
I thought what the hell and went for 10X, the bios reports a 1GHZ chip. Can anybody tell me why at 9X & 9.5X the chip speed was reported incorrectly.

What can you use to remove the pencil lines from the chip if needed? also If I have to remove the heatsink again what is the best thing to use to remove the old thermal paste?

The system has been running stable at 1GHZ for about 2 hours now with no crashes, VIA Hardware monitor reports CPU temp at 30C, and around 42C after playing direct 3d games for about half an hour

You need to redo your pencil better. I did the same thing and had to redo the pencil. Some lead is better than others and the Loctite(rear window defogger-765-1460) is the best. Good luck, sounds like you got a good chip

Nice, but you get the most performence gain by upping the FSB, but it results in a less stable system!

just redo the pencil, and brake fluid works best removing the old paste. regular erasor will be fine in taking out the pencil marks.
