1gig memory yet?

I might upgrade to a gig depending on how well BF Vietnam runs with the 512 that I've got now.
I would have upgraded a while ago to be honest, but the RDRAM is hella expensive.
 
I have had 1 gig for over one year now,it's good to have lots of ram.

Having too much ram will not slow down a system but too little....... 😉

Except I run all those games well with 512...

Are there advantages of a gig? certainly, is it necessary? nope. 512 is prolly good for another year imo. Then you'll need a gig and a 256 meg vga card too I imagine.
 
I think you may have just answered your own question with that last post. If you're happy with your game's performance, don't upgrade. However, from my own experience, having 1GB has been wonderful, not just in games, but in switching between applications and general windows performance.
 
Well reason I ask is because I got some in a trade and wonder if I should sell and save for future upgrades. I currently have 2x 256 OCZ gold in dual channel and thinking about adding the 512mb OCZ Gold I will be getting in the middle. But that would eleminate dual channel right? How will that effect things? Heard a gig only really helps in newer game load times(maps and stuff).
 
Best advice I could give would be to check out the documentation for your mobo. Under the section on memory, it'll tell you what slots to place your sticks and if you'll still have dual-channel or not. For example, let's say you have slot A1, B1, A2, B2. For dual-channel to work, you need identical sticks in A1 and B1, going on that logic you may be able to put that 512 stick into A2, and maintain dual-channel operation on A1 and B1. Give it a shot, if it works great! Otherwise, no harm done.
 
I noticed my system was a little laggy after going from 1GB to 512MB, games loaded slower, I ran into longer pauses when opening program or using multiple tabs in Mozilla. If you have the cash o with 1GB, if not, 512MB is fine right now, but may not be in the near future.
 
Best bet is if you can score a quick loan from a friend and see what (if any) improvement there is on your specific system, for your specific needs. Personally, I recently upgraded from 512mb to 1gb and noticed a big improvement.
 
It all depends on what your opinion of "needed" is.

Some people define it as "unable to run at all without it", some people look at it as "unable to run well without it", which again opens interpretation to what "well" is. 😉

I have 1 GB of RAM because it bothers me to have less that optimal performance. If I see 1 studder I itch to upgrade. So, for me, 1 GB is necessary. For you, it might not be. 😉
 
512 is plenty to run all that stuff, but I too have noticed that 1GB is better, and does reduce load times. The biggest game I've seen this is BF1942.
 
My system is more spunky with 1gb compared to 512mb. I especially notice the difference after exiting games, much less disk swapping necessary to open apps.
 
I am getting it as partial trade. I decide to just put it in a load some games and take it out to see how much of a improvment.
 
You should see a pretty good improvement in most newer online games (UT, Halo, etc...) Those are the ones that seem to suck up RAM like mothers (bastard EQ :frown😉
