1ghz thunderbird is boiling

Hello!
I just bought a new machine and it run fine exept the processor runs around 70c degrees!
the hardware I'm currently using:
1ghz thundebird, no overclocking (10.0x100)...yet 😉
Abit KT7-raid mb
Coolermaster DP5-6H51

Few first times I started the computer the temperature was soon around 80c.
The odd thing was that the VIA Hardware Monitor in windows told that the temperature was 38-42. I am a littlebit sceptic what comes to windows so I didn't trust the software.

Next I removed the "thermaltape" or whatever you call it and put some thermalgrease between the chip and cooler. This helped a little and like I already mentioned, the temperature is around 70 in bios but now also VIA HM in windows gave me the same temperature.

I don't know what to do. Should I just keep going with temperatures and hope that the thermometer is broken or buy a new cooler?





 
touch the heatsink ant you'll know wheter the temp is right. im not too familiar with the board (but i have one in the mail🙂). but it might be the bios revision or mebey you bent the thermal resistor to far back when you mounted the chip. but my best guess is that if the chip is realy at 70c then you wouldn't get into windows long enough to see it. btw, what's your case temp and it that heatsink recomended for a 1ghz?
 
hmmm, i cant imagine those temps being correct and you still loading you O/S.....if the heatsink is cool to touch after you turn it off, then it is wrong and you should try to re-seat the heatsink or just take it as the reading is off
 
When I had first booted my machine with a Duron 650 on an Asus a7v, I hadn't put on the heatsink right, and it wasn't making contact with the core. In this situation, the cpu temp in the bios was around 70 C, and as I was in the middle of installing Win2k, it crashed (it was after this that I found out what the temp was). If your machine is running fine, and you actually have a heatsink on the chip, there's no way it's running 70 C.
 
The heatsink is warm after shutdown but not hot. I have tried to install the cooler about 50 times but temperature is always the same. Currently I am experimenting with loads of thermalgrease on the chip and it helped once more a little bit. Now the processors temp is from 60 to 65c.
The Coolermaster should cool down up to 1.2ghz Athlons so that should not be the problem.
 
Try holding your mobo up to the light and look if you can see light coming thru between the cpu and heatsink to check if they're making contact.
 
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to put on as little thermal gease as possible, not loads of it. 🙂 The grease is just supposed to fill in the holes between the heatsink and processor.
 
I'm having the same prob with my 1ghz, it's not stable at default with Fop-38 and after a crash the heatsink was burning hot, I am using thermal compound, what could be the prob?

For a quick fix, you can install a larger 60mm (higher cfm) fan onto your DP5-6H51,......
I did the same thing, just make sure it is greater cfm......!
 
Ok, I know this may sounds dumb, but make sure you have your heatsinks on the right way. Beleive it or not, many are now selling with a front and back. Gone are the days where they were all just squares that did not matter which way you put them on. If you look on the bottom of your heatsink, there might be a little step. The step is a little recessed so that when you mount the heatsink over the cpu, there is room for the step on the proccessor grid. (the plastic part on your motherboard). If you have it on backwards, it may cause your heatsink to not properly sit on your CPU.
ANd yes, the less grease you use the better, thin layer is best, but usually the pressure applied from the heat sink will press out excess...
 
The heatsink is installed properly so that should not be the problem.
Those thermalgrease advices really bothers me. All you guys say that I should use as little as I can but I got the processor much cooler when "painted" the processor white instead of putting only a small drop over the processor core.

 
i wonder if it isn't safe to say you got a bad chip? My retail ghz tbird at stock voltage etc says its running at less than 40 after being on all day and I can touch the heatsink and not feel an ounce of warmth at all.

if your not overclocking and have some goop and your heatsink contacting and fan running something is terribly wrong.

Currently im at 90 F, with my computer being on for about 5 hours.
the heatsink is cool to touch, and the air comming out is cool.
im not using any thermal compound or anything. the only thing else
i did was tape up my case, so that the only holes in it are in the front
and the end to promote better air flow
 
k, there is no way your CPU runs at 90c for 5 hours without crashing, you temp is off.
the thing about the heatsink being cool either means that it is really working or it isnt making good contact....90c? i havent seen that kind of temp ever, the computer would always crash before getting that hot

Check that the CPU is fully seated in the socket. It is possible to lock the socket with the processor a little high on one corner or one side. (Especially if the in-socket thermistor is pressing against the bottom of the processor.) If the processor is not fully seated in the socket, the heatsink will not set perfectly flush to the core no matter how many times you mount it.

Also, your heatsink is very marginal for a 1GHz AMD.

i know this may sound stupid, but have u checked that the reading in Windows is C or F...????

cos this may make all the difference, 70c and 70f are totally different!
 
The Program you are using should tell you whether it is reading in C or in F. Most programs read in C, but a cpu temp of 90C sustained isn't possible, even for duron/t-bird cores.

I tried once again to reinstall cooler/processor and I saw an interesting little thing:
The electronic device (whatever you guys call it in english...) which measures the temperature from the processor looks like it has melted from the top. The "root" is blue but the head is whitish. Also there is a small blue dot under my processor!
What does the "device" look in other kt7-raids? I'm very interested...
I carefully bent the "device" so it would measure the temperature from the otherside. I certified the correct position with a ruler. And the result?
very stable around 50 celcius degrees. I know it still is a little bit high, but at least I now dare to use the computer a little (like writing this).

I still am planning to buy a new cooler and I was wondering if any of you "gurus" have any experience with Spire 5d21b3? (www.bytecom.nl) Does it even fit to KT7-Raid? I know there are many "oc-freak certified" coolers but this one I could get one from the local store.
