1GHz T-Bird or P4 1.6(not Northwood)

Help!

I can't decide. I currently have a 1GHz T-Bird, overclocked(1.3GHz), works great with 512M and an Abit KT7a Board. Well, I was given by a family member a P4 1.6(256k cache) with 512M on it with an ASUS p4b266 Mainboard. I really like the idea of having the 1.6 GHz system, but was thinking of giving to my wife for her upgrade instead of the 1 GHz T-Bird. Would a 1.6GHz really be much faster? I looked at a few reviews and they really aren't much quicker. I mostly burn MPEGs, VCDs, game a bit. Is it worth it to go through the upgrade or just stay were I'm at and work towards future upgrades (ClawHammer).

I say the P4 would be faster,first of all you'll be going from PC133 to PC2100 DDR or did the board come with PC1600?

That Asus P4B266 is a nice board & it would be a cheap upgrade for you to get a 1.6A and go for 2.2 + ghz.

So I say use the P4,even that old willy 1.6ghz should be able to overclock a bit.

It came with PC2100 RAM, so that would be a boost their.

Tbird would be faster. At least from my experiance... My TBIRD 1.33 266FSB (not xp) cracks RC5-64 at about ~4,600,000keys/sec. A friend of mine is running a P4 1.6ghz and it cracks at ~2,300,000keys/sec. You might want to look up older reviews, but I think a P4 that's running under 2 ghz isn't worth it.

If you run them at 1.3 GHz and 1.6 GHz respectively, the TBird will likely be faster in most stuff, however if you get a good overclock on the P4, it will be the faster CPU in most stuff.

if you're looking at this like a small bandaid till Hammer, go with the AMD. You'll find they cost much much less than the P4, which will help you save up for the nice new Hammer, especially since you're going to have to drop money for a new mobo and possible better RAM when it comes out.

Yeah i think you should keep the athlon
the .18micron non-northwood P4 is likely to not overclock very well at all
and the wife will feel special since yur giving her the "P4 1.6ghz"

At default speeds, the Pentium 4 will be faster overall, at the speeds you are talking about the Athlon is going to be a might faster, it's the old 6 lanes travelling at 133kph as opposed to 4 lanes travelling at 160kph (speeding!). Which one is going to shift more traffic?

There will be some stuff that the P4 is faster at but many things will be faster with the Athlon.
