1GHz Duron and Mobo 109+ at TCWO...

This is an awesome deal for a low-end computer. 1GHz CPU, mobo, sound, video and network card, kick-ass for $110!

<< Good deal if you are willing to use the built-in video. If you don't plan on using the video, I'd go with the ECS... >>

Yeah... but it's a PC Chips board. :/

If you're willing to go refurbs, then you can get a 1.0 duron for ~30, and an abit or asus socket A mobo for 49. Only if youre willing to deal with newegg's refurbs...

So when does the day come that ECS stops getting branded for their PC Chips past? The ECS K7S5a is a great board. I've put together three machines with them so far, all went flawlessly.

Yeah, but it works well. LOL. It's great for illiterate people when going to school for a cheap system. You don't need a powerful computer to listen to mp3s, play the occasional game, email, AIM/ICQ and look at porn. Plus it's got a nice on-board soundcard and 10/100 NIC. All big plusses.

I'd say roughly 65-75% of all computers users only do those things you listed..... well after you add word processing & web surf that is.

I'm not concerned with how much a person was using the product... I'm concerned with the quality of the product. When they work, they work well, but have you ever seen the percentage of failure on an ECS/PC Chips/Amptron product? Whew! 😛

Here's a review of the K7S5A:

I think PcChips has a somewhat undeserved reputation. Yes, there was the one board with the fake L2 cache. (I've got one and it still works). Yes their web site is pretty much useless. But the computer I'm using right now is has a PcChips mobo. It is rock stable and was very inexpensive.

"Though Elitegroup usually targets the low cost and OEM market, this motherboard should be suitable for most users."

Yeah... Should be....

ANY review, including the one's I write, should be taken with a grain of salt.

1. A board shipped to a review site is a sample that has been through thorough quality control before it's shipped. You wouldn't want to ship a dead board to a review site.

2. You can't pan a motherboard completely or you may never get another review product from that company and you certainly won't get linked from their site.

3. Most people that do reviews don't work in an environment where they are exposed to a large volume of product. I worked for a wholesaler (not wholesale to the public, but real wholesale. The guys who supply the PC Chips boards to the public) just over 3 years ago. PC Chips had a high RMA rate back then. Where I work now, we quit selling PC Chips after I was here for two years, because of their high RMA rate. I'm still good friends with a person that does return to manufacturer for that distributor I worked for. He says half of his day is spent testing bad PC Chips boards. FYI: That distributor also sells MSI, Asus and DFI.

I'm sure you have a good ECS board. MOST of them are good in ever way shape and form (remember what the definition of MOST is, though).

But PC Chips doesn't have an undeserved reputation. Trust me, they earned it.

PC Chips is a board that I will never own again. The first two were bad, it was past the return period. I got lucky with the third. The ones I purchased before that time were ok for about the first 6 or 7 months, then they started to have problems. I ended up buying those customers new boards and I can't return the ones I have in my garage.

I guess if you are trying to save ten bucks, then go for it. Just be ready to replace it after several months.

Another little detail: the Biostar board in the bundle appears to have an ISA slot, which could be useful for hooking up a legacy SCSI scanner or modem for mom & dad.

Most all of the pcchips boards suck. I've been using the 841 amd ddr board for basic computers Has a 740 sis chipset on it and mem scores are close to that of a 266a. HAS ONBOARD 64 MEG VIDEO THAT WILL COMPLETE 3D MARK 2001 AND SCORE 2000 ON A 1.2 DURON.

DO NOT BUY THIS 133KT CHIPSET BOARD YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
